French writer and illustrator, Jean de Brunhoff was born Dec. 9, 1899 in Paris, France.
Jean had three siblings and his father was a successful publisher.
He served in World War I following graduation. After the war, Jean studied to become a professional artist. He married and had three sons of his own. Jean was best known for his creation of Babar the Elephant series of children’s books published in 1931.
He died Oct. 16, 1937 in Switzerland from Tuberculosis at the age of
38. Ten years after his death, his oldest son, at the young age of 13, took up the writing of the Babar Series and published many more Babar the Elephant books.
American poet Emily Dickinson was born Dec. 10, 1830 in Amherst, Mass., the middle of three children.
Emily was an excellent student and began writing as a teenager.
Having never married, she lived at the Homestead with her sister, stayed to herself and wrote lots of poetry that was never published while she was alive.
After her death on May 15, 1886 in Amherst, Mass., her sister found her many writings and published them in 1890.
In 1955, “The Poems of Emily Dickinson” was published and her works soared because they were released in her form of writing like intended.
The Homestead, where Emily was born, is now a museum which opened in 2003 under ownership of Amherst College and hosts 15,000 visitors a year.
