A Nevada resident is in the Okmulgee jail after he was arrested Sunday evening with over 600 pounds of marijuana.
On Nov. 23 at approximately 10:50 p.m, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper observed a white U-Haul truck traveling eastbound on Interstate 40.
According to court documents, the officer noticed the vehicle drift over the fog line several times and observed that it was going 62 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone.
The vehicle was pulled over near mile marker 241 in Okmulgee County and contact was made with the driver who identified himself as 26-year-old Alex Vongsouphanh of Las Vegas, Nev.
Vongsouphanh said the reason he was failing to maintain the vehicle lane was because he was tired and had been driving all day.
The trooper asked Vongsouphanh to sit in his patrol car with him while he ran the documents and drivers license.
Vongsouphanh told the trooper he was headed to Tennessee because he was moving there.
After the license check, the trooper asked Vongsouphanh if there was anything illegal on his person or within the vehicle.
Vongsouphanh said there was nothing illegal in the vehicle but then stated he had a THC vape in the front of the truck in his bag.
The trooper located the THC vape in a black bag in the front passenger seat and Vongsouphanh stated it belonged to him. The trooper then opened the rear roll up door on the U-Haul. At this point, he could allegedly smell a strong odor of marijuana.
The trooper asked Vongsouphanh if he had a medical marijuana card but was told he did not as it was just recreational use. Vongsouphanh was then asked how much marijuana was in the truck but, according to the court documents, did not answer and instead continued to give the trooper consent to search.
After retrieving a ladder, the trooper was able to get onto the top of the load in the U-Haul and was able to climb to the front.
Once there, he checked under a mattress and observed numerous large boxes.
According to the affidavit, he cut one box open and observed many vacuum sealed bundles of high-grade marijuana inside the box.
Vongsouphanh was taken into custody and a wrecker was called for assistance.
After the vehicle was towed to the wrecker yard, the furniture was removed. Twenty-two large boxes and two duffle bags filled with marijuana were discovered.
According to court documents, the 22 boxes contained a total of 590 vacuum-sealed one-pound bundles and the duffle bag contained nine vacuumed-sealed one-pound bundles.
There was also a red duffle bag which contained two vacuumed sealed one-pound bundles, 26 jars of marijuana, eight small baggies of marijuana, four jars of THC wax and 10 packages of rolling papers.
Approximately 601 one-pound vacuum-sealed bags were discovered.
Vongsouphanh was transported to the Okmulgee County Jail and was booked in on charges of Trafficking Marijuana, Possession of CDS and Possession of Paraphernalia.
He is being held on a $53,500 bond and will return to court on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. before Judge Ramirez.
