A successful Demons’ passing offense swept past the Chisholm Longhorns in the Second Round of the OSSAA Class 2A Playoffs. Beggs dominated the air against Chisholm Friday night in a 27-6 smackdown that punched the Demons’ ticket to the playoff quarterfinals this Friday. Beggs senior quarterback Dusty Pendergrass was at the helm of the Demons’ passing offense and led them to an early lead against the Longhorns.

Despite having a competitive offense, the Longhorns were shutout out of the endzone in the first quarter. The Demons had sole control of the field offensively with Pendergrass finding junior Kendal Daniels open for a 16-yard touchdown reception. A field goal from Pendergrass put the Demons ahead with seven minutes left in the first quarter 7-0.

The Longhorns did have a tough passing offense that earned 151 passing yards Friday, but the Demons had a more successful defense, which led to the Demons earning an uncontested lead.

Four minutes left in the first quarter and Beggs running back CJ Brown found the endzone on a 9-yard touchdown run, extending the Demons hold of the field to 14-0.

The Longhorns had no answer to the Demons’ 14-point advantage despite having four minutes left. They were able to awaken some of their offense, however, in the second quarter. Chisholm quarterback Kaleb Dent completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Chisholm senior Nate Edwards, putting the Longhorns on the scoreboard 14-8.

Though they were able to break Beggs’ shutout win possibilities seconds into the second quarter, the Longhorns wouldn’t see the endzone the rest of the game. It took the Demons 10 minutes, but they were able to match the Longhorns before the end of the half. Senior running back Easton Davis brought the Demons to a 21-8 lead after catching a 33-yard touchdown reception.

The Demons returned after half and went to battle against a renewed Longhorn defense. Both teams fought to get towards the endzone. With three minutes left in the third quarter, the Demons offense had beaten down the Longhorns to get within striking distance of the endzone. Pendergrass found a gap in the Longhorns’ defense wide enough to complete a 3-yard touchdown run. A failed kick didn’t deter the Demons, who were now in charge of a 27-8 lead. They maintained control of the field the rest of the quarter, allowing the Longhorns no headway.

The fourth quarter saw the Demons once against completely shut down the Longhorns, who had not seen the end-zone since the second quarter. The Demons ended the game with a 27-8 victory that has earned them a spot in the OSSAA Class 2A quarter-finals.

This marks the second year in a row that the Demons have made it to the quarter-finals. The Demons are scheduled to host quarter-finals this year on Friday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Lindsay recently beat Eufaula in the second round in a one-point battle, 15-14.
