An untouchable campaign is coming to a close before playoffs begin in a week. The Dragons have remained undefeated throughout the 2019 season, building up an incredible 9-0 season record and have even defeated their district foe, the Keota Lions.
Entering Week 10, the Dragons will travel to face the Porum Panthers tonight, who are ranked second to last in District B-6. The Panthers only recently pulled out of a four-game losing streak, defeating Cave Springs, who is 1-8 for the season, in Week 8, but were left with their sixth loss of the season when they fell to Gans 48-26.
Unlike the Dragons, the Panthers have had a turbulent season, which has left them with a 1-3 district record and a 3-6 overall record. Porum has shown that they can control a balanced offense, but they fall short of their opponent’s overall strength. The Panthers blanked in a 12-point decision with the Gans Grizzlies in Week 9, garnering only 289 total yards to the Grizzlies powerful 451. The Grizzlies got the drop on the Panthers in the first half, obtaining a 36-12 advantage that Porum tried to overturn in the second half. They garnered two rushing touchdowns and one touchdown pass, but it wasn’t enough to match the Grizzlies’ impeccable passing offense, which earned four touchdowns.
While Porum blanked in Week 9, the Dragons took down their toughest district opponent to earn the District Championship. A late fourth-quarter comeback from the Lions put the Dragons in a spot that they hadn’t been all season. Forced to perform to the best of their abilities, the Dragons proved how they established themselves as the No. 1 team in District B-6. Dewar quarterback Joey Fowler threw for 164 yards, while also obtaining 196 yards on the ground. Fowler’s prowess on the field, along with running backs Shawn Maxwell and Thomas Brownfield, helped the Dragons obtain 523 total yards against the Lions.
Porum’s quarterback Briley Berry has shown a similar capacity to garner around 100 passing yards a game. He made 22 passing attempts against the Grizzlies, secured a touchdown and also threw for 122 yards. Though the Panthers have a strong passing offense, they can’t match Dewar’s rushing offense. Panthers running back Jacob Briscoe, Berry Iziaha Benton shared ball carrying duties against the Grizzlies and were only able to obtain 167 rushing yards.
Porum has also faced tough defeats to teams that Dewar has already dominated, including Keota and Arkoma.
Their track record shows that they are weak to offenses that have a strong driving force on the field. The Dragons have that exact kind of offense and will be a deadly force to be reckoned with as they look to continue their perfect track record into the post-season.
