A late six-run streak in the bottom of the fourth clenched another win for the Lady Knights on Thursday, Aug. 29. Hosting the Vian Lady Wolverines, Henryetta brought down their 14th opponent in a 7-2 battle.
A slow start in the first two innings came to a head in the bottom of the third. After being stuck at 0-0 for the first and second inning, the Lady Knights broke through to go on a one-run streak in the bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Wolverines’ at bat was less successful in the third inning. Henryetta sophomore pitcher Avery Miller delivered two strikeouts but the Lady Wolverines were able to get their first hit of the game. A single placed Vian’s runner on first base but a pop out to third baseman Kaylie Hamric for a third out to end the inning.
Henryetta catcher Katelyn Dwiggins landed a line drive out to center field to get the Lady Knights’ offense moving in the bottom of the third. Miller hit a sacrifice bunt to the Lady Wolverines’ pitcher to advance Dwiggins to second.
With one out on the board, Lady Knight first baseman Autumn Blackbear singled on a line drive to left field. Despite being held up at second at the last at bat, Dwiggins rounded third and headed to home to score the first run of the game.
The Wolverines attempted to match the offensive might of the Lady Knights, earning a single to start the fourth inning. However, the Lady Knights proved too strong, immediately giving the Lady Wolverines three straight outs, including two strikeouts.
Hitting a single in the bottom of the fourth, Hamric provided the Lady Knights their chance to get a sturdier lead. Hamric advanced to second base after Lexi Lollis hit a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch gave Hamric the opportunity to cross home plate, 2-0.
Dwiggins singled on a hard ground ball out to center field and got all the way to third on the throw. With Dwiggins in scoring position, the Lady Wolverines loaded the bases with two consecutive walks.
Henryetta first baseman Autumn Blackbear hit a single out to center field, sending both Dwiggins and Miller in to score. The Lady Knights had more than doubled their score and were not done yet. The Lady Wolverines walked Skylar Morris, putting Kasedi Gobin on third base and Blackbear on second base.
Brooklyn Baughman ended the fourth inning with a triple bomb out to right field. Gobin, Blackbear and Morris all made it safely across home plate to increase the Lady Knights score to 7-0.
Having gone on an incredible six-run streak, the Lady Knights became untouchable. Though the Lady Wolverines had a small chance of making a comeback, they still were able to break through their scoring rut to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning.
The Lady Wolverines landed six hits against Miller throughout the game and one of them paid off in the top of the fifth. An error provided the Lady Wolverines a free advantage to score, while two back-to-back singles ran in their first run.
Though the Lady Wolverines might have gotten one player across home plate, they still trailed behind the Lady Knights 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Knights fell into a scoring draught. Two fly outs to right and left field gave them little opportunity to score, while a groundout ended the inning.
Facing a tough fifth inning offensively, the Lady Knights still held on to their lead, 7-1.
The Lady Wolverines edged out one more run in the top of the sixth inning. Testing the waters in the fifth inning, they were able to find a few hits against Miller that landed them a second run. The Lady Wolverines hit a single at the start of the inning, while a sacrifice bunt and an error got their runner to home, 7-2.
The Lady Knights’ lead was cut down to just a five-run advantage and another slow inning in the bottom of the sixth left their lead in the open. Hitting into another series of fly outs, the Lady Knights were left with no runs.
Still in the lead 7-2, the Lady Knights ensured their opponents wouldn’t come close to their lead. A flyout and two pop outs kept the Lady Knights ahead 7-2.
The Lady Knights were set to return to action Tuesday, Sept. 3 to play against the Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs. Traveling to Okmulgee, the Lady Knights will face the opponent they opened the season against. The opener game against Okmulgee started the season strong for the Lady Knights, who earned a 9-1 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs have faced a few rough patches this season, resulting in a season record of 3-10.
