Beggs possessed the offensive and defensive strength to hold back county neighbor the Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night at home. After defeating the Lady Pirates 3-2, the Lady Demons tacked on another win, earning a 10-0 shutout win. The Lady Bulldogs found their way on base throughout the game but were stopped short of scoring each time.
The Lady Bulldogs started the game with a strikeout but Lady Bulldog senior pitcher Nyah Robol came out swinging. Robol smacked a single out towards left field to get on base and would steal to second. Though the Lady Bulldogs had a runner on second, a flyout and a strikeout would end the inning before Robol could cross home plate.
With the score still at 0-0, Lady Demon Hannah Padgett led the way to a Beggs’ advantage, hitting a double. Two consecutive walks from Robol load the bases for the Lady Bulldogs. Padgett scored on a passed ball and Phelps made it to third base, while Haileigh Mills was up to bat. Mills grounded out towards Lady Bulldog third baseman Karlea Penn, but Phelps used the out as an opportunity to score, 2-0. The Lady Bulldogs caught a flyball to shortstop Jade Whinery, who throws towards third base to get Lady Demon Kaylee Hutton out before she could reach third base.
Facing a two-run deficit, the Lady Bulldogs struggled offensively in the top of the second inning. Lady Demon pitcher Kaci Phelps threw two strikeouts, matching the first inning. The Lady Bulldogs grounded out to Lady Demon second baseman Caylee York for the third out.
After being held back in the first inning, the Lady Demons went on a scoring barrage in the bottom of the second. York and Shelby Caldwell reach base after a hit by pitch and a walk. Devon Hightower leveled a ground ball and reached to first on an error, allowing York to also cross home, 3-0. The Lady Demons had Hightower poised at second and Caldwell held up at third when Phelps hit a line drive towards left field. Her single advanced Hightower to third base and sent Caldwell to home, 4-0.
Another series of walks gave the Lady Demons an opportunity to extend their lead to 5-0. With the bases loaded, Haily Barnes smacked a hard ground ball to left field, earning 2 RBIs for the Lady Demons, 7-0.
The Lady Bulldogs faced a tough uphill battle in the top of the third inning. Phelps struck out all three batters, turning the inning back over to the Lady Demons.
In the bottom of the third, the Lady Bulldogs pulled out all the defensive stops. Two fly balls put two outs on the board for the Lady Demons, while Robol ended the inning with a strikeout.
The Lady Demons were able to maintain their shutout score in the top of the fourth, leaving the Lady Bulldogs to struggle with a line out towards left field and another two strikeouts.
The Lady Bulldogs’ offensive struggles began to translate defensively with the Lady Demons scoring another three runs. Robol walked two runners, providing the Lady Demons a good set up to score. Mills hit a double towards left field, sending both Hutton and Phelps, who were on base from walks, to home plate. Up 9-0, the Lady Demons secured their win after Barnes hit a single advancing Mills to third base. York’s sacrifice fly not only got Mills to home but put the Lady Demons in the lead 10-0.
The Lady Bulldogs had one last shot of breaking the shutout win in the top of the fifth inning. Lady Bulldog Morgan James made it to first on a ground ball and Whinery advanced her to second with a single of her own. With two outs on the board, James took a chance to steal to third base. The Lady Demons read the play and tagged James out to end the game 10-0.
