Over a week ago, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 539 in Henryetta reported missing flags that were displayed along Main Street.
After a rash of severe storms in June, seven flags were believed to have been swept away by high winds. Some of the much-weathered and brittle brackets that housed the flags were completely broken off the poles.
Three of the seven missing flags were returned.
VFW Post 539 Commander Bill Goodner reported that the City of Henryetta has generously agreed to help with replacement costs and repairs through the Parks and Tourism Department.
The City went a step further, covering the purchase and placement of 36 flags in total along Main Street.
“I would like to give a special thanks to Mayor Jennifer Munholland, Interim City Manager Donna White, Fire Chief David Bullard and Henryetta Public Works Director Ron Casey,” Goodner said.
Goodner reported that Jason White of White’s Welding worked late Friday evening on the brackets to try and have them ready in time to be put up before the 4th of July holiday.
“It was a really nice gesture on Jason’s part,” Goodner said.
So far, 12 new brackets have be placed and 24 more will be installed at a later date.
