CREOKS Health Services, a non-profit behavioral health organization in Okmulgee, held the official launch Tuesday of the Individual Placement and Support Program (IPS). Chief Executive Officer Brent Black was on hand at the meeting to meet with staff and managers. IPS provides supported employment and education to individuals with behavioral health challenges. This program is offered by Okmulgee CREOKS through funds provided by SAMSHA. IPS services are available to anyone with behavioral health challenges who would like to work, according to the agency. IPS specialists provide direct assistance with work and targeted educational training that will result in competitive employment, based on the individual’s occupational preferences. Specialists also provide support with coordinating transportation, childcare and ongoing treatment and counseling. IPS provides targeted job development and training, and a rapid job search, often resulting in a face-to-face interview with an employer within 30 days. According to Amber Gutierrez, vice president of Marketing and Communications, benefits of steady competitive employment for those with behavioral health challenges include increased income, positive self-esteem, expanded social networks, and a better quality of life. Those in the IPS program have reported better control of symptoms, reduced hospitalization, and reduced substance use. “Studies show that those with behavioral health challenges want to work and have a real impact on their community. The IPS program is designed to help them do just that,” Gutierrez said. CREOKS Health Services behavioral health division has been serving communities in Oklahoma since 1980. The agency works with local agencies, schools, and civic organizations to help individuals and families. The organization also offers a wide-range of services in their clinics and through home or school-based programs, and help individuals needing brief counseling, substance abuse treatment or those struggling with behavioral challenges.
