May 16th, 1950 is the birth date of Bruce Coville, author of Young Adult fiction. Born in Syracuse, New York it was a writing assignment in sixth grade that made Bruce start thinking about being a writer and by age seventeen he knew he wanted to be an author. At nineteen he got married, had three children, became an elementary teacher and finally got his first book published in 1977. We have several of his (JF) books: Always October; Diary of a Mad Brownie; Goblins on the Prowl; Hatched; (JSF) Into the Land of the Unicorns; The Last Hunt; Song of the Wanderer.

May 17th, 1939 is the birth date of Gary Paulsen, American writer of Young Adult literature best know for writing about the wilderness and outdoors. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota Paulsen had a sad childhood with alcoholic parents, running away from home at fourteen, visited a library where he found books to be wonderful companions. He worked a variety of jobs to support himself and finally became a magazine editor which led to his first book being published in 1966. He has written over 200 books and magazine articles, married and has three children. We have several of his (JF) Lawn Boy Returns; Amos Gets Famous; Family Ties: the theory, practice and destructive properties of relatives; Harris and Me; (YAF) Sarny, a life remembered.

Summer Reading Program is in the planning stages with registration to begin at the Library on Tuesday, May 28th. First through eight graders can read all summer for prizes and there will be a special program each Monday during June and the first and second Mondays in July. Programs will be held at the Civic Center from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Happy Mother’s Day Sunday, May 12th to all those special ladies out there!
