Sunday, March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day!
Lois Lowry, American author of children’s books was born on March 20th, 1937 in Honolulu, HI. From an early age she knew she wanted to be a writer. She preferred to read than go outside and play with her friends. Her books seem to deal with human connection and when books get too serious, she uses a bit of humor. We have her (JF) Number the Stars; (YASF) The Giver.
Louis Sachar, American Young Adult author of mystery and comedy was born on March 20th, 1954 in East Meadow, NY. When he was nine, they moved to California where he attended school and later college majoring in Economics. While in college he worked with a second/third grade class at an elementary school to earn part of his college credits. Following his college graduation, he wrote his first children’s book which took about nine months and it was accepted for publication during his first week at law school. When he finished law school, he practiced legal work part-time and wrote part-time. As his books started selling, he gave up on law and started writing full time. For relaxation he loves to play bridge and travels the country doing so. We have his (JF) Fuzzy Mud; Marvin Redpost: is He a Girl?; (YAF) The Cardturner; Holes; Small Steps.
