HENRYETTA - The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity baseball team scored their third-straight win Monday evening with an 11-4 thrashing of the visiting Wetumka Chieftains. In their first three games of the 2019 season, the Knights (3-3) suffered losses to Lincoln Christian (6-2), Beggs (17-9), and Dewar (3-2) before notching their first win of the year last Thursday with a 9-3 decision over the Eufaula Ironheads in the Knights' home opener. The Henryetta diamond squad followed the home win over Eufaula with a 9-1 victory over the Haskell Haymakers last Friday for their second-straight victory. The Knights will travel to Kiefer today (Friday) to battle the Kiefer Trojans in an attempt to continue their current winning streak. In Monday's home battle with Wetumka, the Chieftains opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first. The Knights countered with three runs in the home half of the inning, then added a run in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 advantage. After a scoreless third, Wetumka cut the Henryetta lead to one, 4-3, with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. The Knights plated a run in the last of the fourth to double their lead to 5-3 after four innnings of action. The Henryetta squad extended their lead to 7-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, while Wetumka made it a 7-4 contest with a run in the top of the sixth. The Knights put the finishing touches on their 11-4 victory by pushing across four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Henryetta defense kept the Chieftains off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to walk off their home field with their third-straight win after beginning the season with three straight losses. Jared Montgomery was handed the baseball for the Knights and went the distance on the mound to earn the pitching decision. The Henryetta right-hander gave up four runs on nine hits with 12 strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work. Offensively, the Knights scattered nine hits in the contest, led by the duo of Montgomery (2 for 4, single, double, RBI) and Jerad Fife (2 for 3, 2 singles, 3 RBIs) with two hits each. The other base hits for the Henryetta squad against Wetumka came on singles by Drew Brown, Brodie Graffman, Ethan Wincle, and Jean Pixler and a 2-run single by Andrew Morris.
