HENRYETTA - The Henryetta Lady Knight slowpitch softball team kicked off their 2019 campaign last Thursday with a pair of home games. The Lady Knights battled the Warner Lady Eagles, defeating their Muskogee County foes by a 12-5 margin, then outdueled the Coalgate Lady Wildcats 24-16 in the nightcap. The Henryetta diamond squad was back in action on Monday with a 3-team battle at home against Wetumka and Beggs and were scheduled to be back at home on Tuesday before competing at the Beggs Tournament Thursday and Friday and the Okemah Festival Saturday. In last Thursday's season opener against Warner, the visitors got the scoring started with a run in the top of the first. The Lady Knights countered with three runs in their half of the first for a 3-1 advantage, then extended their lead to 8-1 with a 5-run bottom of second. Warner plated a pair of runs in the third and two more in the fifth for an 8-5 advantage for the Lady Knights after four and one-half innings of action. A 4-run bottom of the fifth put the game out of reach for Henryetta, as the HHS defense kept the Lady Eagles off the scoreboard in the top of the sixth to come away with the 12-5 victory. The Lady Knights scattered 11 hits in the contest, including four home runs. Kasedi Gobin was the offensive leader for Henryetta, going 3 for 4 with three singles and an RBI. Mattie Blackbear (2 for 3, single, home run, 2 RBIs), Lauren Lee (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), and Avery Miller (2 for 3, 2 home runs, 5 RBIs) also recorded multi-hit games for the Lady Knights with two hits apiece. Blackbear's home run came on a 2-run shot in the first. Miller's first roundtripper came on a solo shot in the first, then the freshman cleared the bases with a Grand Slam home run in the 5-run second. The final two base hits for Henryetta in the opener came on a single by Katelyn Dwiggins and a 2-run home run in the fifth by Kaylie Hamric. Other HHS baserunners against Warner were Lee (walk), Miller (walk), Dwiggins (walk, fielder's choice), Hamric (walk, fielder's choice), Mattie Blackbear (walk), Autumn Blackbear (walk, error), Ashlyn Green (2 walks), and Emily Smith (2 walks). In last Thursday's slugfest against Coalgate, both teams combined for 40 runs on 37 hits and 10 home runs. Coalgate got a pair of home runs by Denson and Brown, while the Lady Knights had five players blast home runs, including two by Lauren Lee. Coalgate opened the scoring with six runs in the top of the first. The Lady Knights cut the deficit to four, 6-2, with a pair of runs in the home half of the first. Another 6-run production by Coalgate in the top of the second put the Henryetta ladies in a 12-2 hole after one and one-half innings. The Lady Knights erupted for 16 runs in the bottom of the second to go in front, 18-12. Coalgate plated four runs in the top of the third for an 18-16 contest. The Henryetta ladies tallied two runs in the last of the fourth, then put the game on ice with a 4-run bottom of the fifth, giving the Lady Knights the 24-16 victory. The Lady Knights finished with 19 hits in the run-rule win, led by Lee, who went 4 for 5 with two singles, two home runs, and 5 RBIs. Both of Lee's roundtrippers came in the 16-run second. Lee blasted a solo shot, then cleared the bases with a Grand Slam in his second at-bat of the inning. Mattie Blackbear also recorded a 4-hit game for the Lady Knights, tallying two singles, a double and a home run - a Grand Slam in the second - and 5 RBIs. Katelyn Dwiggins was next offensively for Henryetta with a 3-for-3 performance with a pair of singles, a double, and 2 RBIs.
