DEWAR - The Dewar Dragons needed just one inning to secure a season-opening victory over the visiting Summit Christian Eagles last Friday afternoon at Wiley Ryal Park. The Dragons scored 11 of their 12 total runs in their first at-bat, sending a total of 16 hitters to the plate in the 11-run inning. While the Dewar offense took advantage of nine walks from two different SC pitchers in two innings, Shawn Maxwell and the Dragon defense did not allow the visitors to plate any runs in three innings, awarding the host Dewar squad the 12-0, season-opening, win. Maxwell allowed only two Summit Christian hitters to reach base in three innings of work, but neither batter reached via a base hit. Maxwell hit the second batter of the contest, then gave up a 2-out walk in the second. In both cases, the sophomore hurler was able to get out of the inning without either runner scoring. Maxwell recorded a strikeout and popout to second in the first inning and a strikeout in the second. Maxwell accounted for the final two outs of the run-rule victory with a strikeout and a groundout back to the mound that occured after the leadoff hitter in the third grounded out to the first baseman. In three innings, Maxwell walked one, hit a batter, and struck out four to earn the pitching victory. Offensively, the Dragons tallied just six hits. The other baserunners for Dewar in the season opener came on nine walks. Jentry Brison and Josh Maldonado recorded 2-run singles in the 11-run first, while the other four base hits for the Dragons came on singles by Joey Fowler and Thomas Brownfield, a double by Maxwell, and an RBI single by Zane Davis. Other baserunners for Dewar in the season-opening win were Brison (2 walks), Fowler (walk), Maxwell (RBI walk), Brownfield (RBI walk), Brett Hays (2 walks, RBI), Baylor Selby (RBI walk), and Tylor Maldonado (walk). Fowler drove in the lone run in the second with an RBI groundout, while Selby drove in one of the 11 Dewar runs in the first with a sacrifice fly. The Dragons were scheduled to return to action on Monday at home against Graham-Dustin and Tuesday at home against Midway and Henryetta. The Dewar squad will host Paden and Butner Thursday and Weleetka Friday before hitting the road for the first time Saturday with a trip to Gore. --- Dewar 12, Summit Christian 0 Summit Chr. - 0 - 0 - 0 0 - 0 - 1 Dewar - 11 - 1 - x 12 - 6 - 0 Winning Pitcher: Shawn Maxwell Losing Pitcher: Austin Home Runs: None
