St. Michael Catholic Church
The Baptism of the Lord
(Is. 40: 1-5/Titus 2: 11-14/Lk. 3: 15-22)
Last Sunday, we celebrated the Solemnity of the Epiphany. The word of “Epiphany” means “manifestation.” The infant Jesus was manifested himself to people as the Savior not only of the Jews, but of all mankind. Today, the feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus is an Epiphany, a feast of a still further manifestation of the Lord Jesus.
Today, the Church asks us to leave the sweet, touching scene of the crib of Jesus. We must see Jesus not as a tiny, helpless infant, but as a grown man who becomes his public’s divine ministry, who takes upon himself a tremendous burden and responsibility. The burden is the weight of the sins of all mankind. The responsibility is to make reparation for those sins.
The fact that Jesus was baptized by John was something of a difficulty for the early Church. John’s baptism was a rite of baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The early Church was keenly aware of the fact that Jesus as divine was absolutely sinless. The question was why should someone who was free of sin submit to a baptism that included an admission of sin. Jesus Christ, a human and God incarnated, was baptized by John, showed that he was taking upon himself the sins of the world, even though he was perfectly innocent of sin himself. Jesus indeed gives us a model of humility.
The feast of Baptism of Jesus Christ manifests that He came to be our God and Savior through his obedient and loving acceptance of suffering. But it also manifests what our lives as human beings out to be as Christians, as followers of Christ, as those who live the Christ-life today.
We have a call to receive the Baptism from Jesus who established it for our salvation. Through Baptism we have been united with Jesus Christ, the beloved Son of God, and adopted into God’s Holy Trinity family. That is why we call all who have been baptized “Christians” which means that we are all children of God.
Jesus indeed came into the world to carry all our sins. When John the Baptist saw Jesus passing through, he pointed out his disciples; “Behold! This is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Through Baptism we receive that we all need to follow Christ Jesus who is God and Savior for all mankind. We are his disciples and doing what he teaches us for Salvation.
May Jesus help us to follow him and practice what we receive from Jesus’ Baptism.

Waste Not by Mary Morris
After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.” John 6:12
Fewer and fewer of those who lived during the Great Depression are still with us. They learned the real meaning of waste not, want not. Reduce, reuse, recycle isn't a new idea, because for so many who lived in such dire poverty, this was just a way of life.
In our scripture, Jesus had performed a miracle by feeding over 5,000 people with two fish and five loaves of bread. Now that everyone was full, He wanted to make sure nothing was thrown away that was still of use.
But I think Jesus meant a lot more than just the pieces of bread.
What is our perception of people who are unemployed, who abuse drugs or alcohol, who commit crimes, and so on? Do we see them as something that should be tossed away? Are they just waste?
God makes no mistakes. He creates each and every single one of us for a purpose. We may feel sometimes that He's forgotten us, but He's true to all of His promises, including the one that includes loving us despite ourselves.
Even if God hasn't put us in a position to hire the jobless or rehabilitate others, we are able to pray for them. It isn't for us to judge whether the less fortunate could do more for themselves. There, but for God's infinite grace, go you or I. Our love for each other MUST INCLUDE EVERYONE. Jesus loved the adulterer, the tax collector, even the one who betrayed Him and those who beat Him and nailed Him to the cross on which He died. And, "Jesus told them, 'This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.'" (John 6:29)
We who experience the immeasurable joy, hope, faith, and love that come from Christ must be willing to share. And there are so many who are literally in the trenches of places like the inner city, drug dens, and tenements, doing what they can to bring people to Jesus.
Maybe that's not you, but you can still pray for them, the work they do, and the people they're working with. These missionaries are "gather[ing] the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted." Believe in their work. Believe in the One who sent them. Trust to His mighty works.
And pray.

New Life Apostolic Church
Sin separates man from fellowship with God. Since Genesis 3:6 Documented Sin No. l when man rebelled against God in the Garden of Eden, sin still separates man from his maker.
Sin is no small matter; the price of sin is indeed expensive. Sin cost man his dominion over the earth, selling his rights to Satan, and sin destroyed the perfect relationship man enjoyed with God in paradise.
Salvation means deliverance from sin. Repentance is the starting place for this shackle-busting provision of mercy created through God's love for mankind. However, man has no option or freedom to choose the road back to fellowship with God. How can an unholy people be reconciled to a Holy God? Always by some means of sacrifice, which is giving up something of value for something even more valuable. Repentance is not repeatedly confessing sinful acts done over and over again; repentance is Godly sorrow for sins committed, forsaking the sin committed, and Not Doing It Anymore. Repentance is the first step to salvation. No repentance, No salvation.
May God bless you.
Pastor Anna Lewis, New Life Apostolic Church, 201 East 5th Street Suite D 918-993-9926.

James 1: 22 - But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. What does this passage really mean? To hear means to agree and understand what the Word of God says. If a person agrees with the Word of God and does not do what the Word of God says, they are deceiving themselves.
