TULSA - The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity basketball team failed to produce a victory last weekend at the 54th Annual Tournament of Champions.

The Lady Dragons, ranked 11th in Class A, dropped all three of their tournament games by a combined 192-84, losing by an average of 36 points per game, to three Top 15 teams in their respective classes.

The Dewar ladies openend tournament action last Thursday against 4A No. 1 Muldrow, suffering a 52-26 defeat to the Lady Bulldogs.

The loss to Muldrow dropped the Lady Dragons into last Friday's consolation semifinal round against the Bixby Lady Spartans, who are ranked 15th in Class 6A.

The Dewar cage squad found the Lady Spartans to be another tough opponent, dropping the loser's bracket contest by a 68-23 margin.

The double-digit defeat put the Lady Dragons in the seventh-place game this past Saturday against the Class B No. 3 Varnum Lady Whippets.

The Dewar ladies were unable to snare a tournament victory last Saturday, suffering a 72-35 defeat at the hands of the Lady Whippets to finish 0-3 at the 54th Annual Tournament of Champions.

During the TOC, the Lady Dragons had trouble putting up points during the event, shooting a combined 26 of 127

(20.5%) from the field during the 3-day tournament.

Against Muldrow, Dewar went 9 for 41 from the field, including making four of 12 three-point baskets. The Lady Dragons also went 4 for 7 from the free throw line in the tournament opener.

Against Bixby, the Lady Dragons went 6 for 41 from the field, including making just one of 12 three-point baskets. Dewar also went 10 for 15 from the free throw line in the loser's bracket showdown.

Against Varnum, the Dewar cage squad went 11 for 45 from the field, including making three of 16 three-point baskets. The Lady Dragons also went 10 for 22 from the free throw line in their tournament finale.

The second half proved detrimental in all three tournament games last weekend, going a combined 9 for 61 in the final two quarters of each contest.

During the 3-day event, the Lady Dragons were held under double-digit scoring in 10 of the 12 quarters played, including the first eight periods.

Dewar was outrebounded in each contest.

The Lady Dragons were outrebounded 39-26 against Muldrow, 40-32 against Bixby, and 46-28 against Varnum.

The top scorer for Dewar during the tournament was senior Morgan Britt with a 3-game total of 24 points.

The 2018 Tournament of Champions was an extra-special event for Dewar head coach Todd Been.

Six years ago, Been had the privilege of leading the Lady Dragons at the 2012 Tournament of Champions event, coaching his two oldest daughters, Cheyenne and Parrish, who were a senior and freshman, respectively, at Dewar High School.

At last weekend's TOC, Been was back on the Mabee Center floor, coaching his two youngest daughters, Savannah and Talyn, who are a senior and freshman at DHS this school year.

Been actually had three of his daughters on the floor at this year's Tournament of Champions, as Cheyenne was sitting alongside her father on the Dewar bench as part of the Lady Dragon coaching staff.

In two TOC appearances, Been and his Lady Dragon cage squad are a combined 1-5 with the lone win coming in the 2012 tournament - a 65-64 victory over 2A Colbert in the seventh-place game.

Last weekend's Tournament of Champions was homecoming of sorts for Dewar assistant Kelly Weigand, who was a member of the Oral Roberts Golden Eagle women's basketball team from 2006-2010.

In other tournament action last Saturday, Muldrow defeated 6A No. 1 Edmond Memorial by a 52-43 margin to capture the TOC championship, Tahlequah Sequoyah (ranked No. 1 in 3A) finished third at the 3-day event with a 65-44 rout of 5A No. 6 East Central, and Bixby edged past 4A No. 5 Victory Christian 53-48 for fifth.

In last Thursday's tournament opener against Muldrow, the Lady Dragons trailed 7-0 before a 3-pointer by sophomore Skye Been at the 3:32 mark of the opening frame put the Dewar squad on the scoreboard for the first time in the contest.

Muldrow took the final three and one-half minutes of the opening period by an 11-6 margin to double up the Lady Dragons 18-9 after one quarter of action.

The Dewar ladies were edged 13-8 in the second stanza to go into the halftime break down 14 (31-17).

The Lady Dragons were unable to overcome the double-digit halftime deficit in the final two frames, being outscored by margins of 13-6 and 8-3, respectively, to suffer the 52-26 defeat.

Britt led the way offensively for Dewar with a team-best nine points. Skye Been was next for the Lady Dragons with eight, followed by Noelani Corbin with five and KiKi Carter with two. Savannah and Talyn Been rounded out the Dewar scoring against Muldrow with one point apiece.

Muldrow was led in scoring by the trio of Taylen Collins, Hannah Boynett, and Madison Chambers with nine points each. Chalynn Mayes was next in the scoring department for the Lady Bulldogs with eight points.

In last Friday's consolation semifinal battle with Bixby, Savannah Been gave the Lady Dragons an early 3-0 advantage with a 3-point basket at the 6:42 mark of the opening quarter. The only other point for the Dewar cage squad in the first period came on a free throw by Morgan Britt that made it a 6-4 lead for Bixby. The Lady Spartans scored the final five points in the frame to take an 11-4 advantage into the second stanza.

The Lady Dragons were edged 12-9 in the seccond period to trail by 10 (23-13) at halftime.

The Dewar squad was unable to get its offense going in the second half, being outscored 45-10 in the final two frames to suffer the 68-23 setback.

Savannah Been was the top scorer for the Lady Dragons against Bixby, finishing with a team-best seven points. Britt was next for Dewar with five, followed by Skye Been with four and Noelani Corbin with three. KiKi Carter and Nakea Harjochee rounded out the Lady Dragon scoring with two points apiece.

Dariann Myles led a trio of double-digit scorers for Bixby, finishing with a game-high 17 points. Savanna Stout (14) and Sydnee Schovanec (11) also reached double figures for the Lady Spartans in the loser's bracket contest.

In last Saturday's seventh-place game against Varnum, the Lady Dragons fell into an early hole, as Varnum tallied the first 12 points of the opening frame before Morgan Britt put the Dewar squad on the scoreboard with a short-range jumper at the 4:43 mark.

Britt's basket sparked a 12-7 run for the Lady Dragons, going into the second period down by seven, 19-12 and marking the first time the Dewar cage squad had scored in double digits in a quarter during the tournament.

The Lady Dragons were doubled up, 20-10, in the second stanza to go into the intermission down by 17 points, 39-22.

The final two quarters went to Varnum by margins of 16-7 and 17-4, respectively, to hand the Dewar squad the 72-35 defeat.

Britt led the way offensively for the Lady Dragons against Varnum with a team-best 10 points. Noelani Corbin was next for Dewar with seven, followed by Skye Been and Savannah Been with six points apiece. Staejha Mack and KiKi Carter rounded out the Lady Dragon scoring in the seventh-place contest with three points each.

The duo of Nakia Harjo and Madyson Kinsey led the scoring attack for Varnum with 23 and 20 points, respectively. Mikayla Wildcat just missed double-digit scoring for the Lady Whippets with nine.

The Lady Dragons will look to get back on the winning track this Friday with a home battle with the Weleetka Lady Outlaws. Friday's second-half opener with Weleetka is scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Clell W. Henson Fieldhouse in Dewar.

After the showdown with Weleetka, the Dewar ladies will travel to Wetumka next Tuesday and will be in Earlsboro next Thursday-Saturday at the Jim Walling Classic basketball tournament.
