Wilson opens home schedule tonight

The Wilson varsity basketball teams will open up the home portion of their 2018-19 schedule tonight against Okmulgee County rival Schulter.

The county showdown at Wilson will get started with the girls game at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys game at approximately 8 p.m.

The Wilson cage squads began the week with a pair of split decisions, traveling to Mason and Butner for back-to-back road games against a pair of Oklahoma schools with Eagle mascots.

In the road games, the Wilson Lady Tigers remained unbeaten on the year with double-digit wins over Mason and Butner. The Lady Tigers notched their second win of the 2018-19 campaign Monday evening with a 51-40 victory over the Mason Lady Eagles.

The Wilson ladies improved to 3-0 on the year on Tuesday evening with a 58-24 rout of the Butner Lady Eagles.

In the Monday's boys contest, the Tigers evened their season record at 1-1 with a 63-56 defeat at the hands of the host Mason Eagles.

The Wilson gentlemen suffered their second-straight loss of the season on Tuesday, falling to the host Butner Eagles by a 75-58 margin.

In Monday's girls game against Mason, the Lady Tigers trailed 14-10 after the first eight minutes of action, then edged the host Lady Eagles 12-10 in the second period to go into the halftime break down by two, 24-22.

The Wilson ladies took the final two stanzas by margins of 15-9 and 14-7, respectively, to walk away with the 51-40 decision.

Ashton Been led all scorers with a game-high 28 points. Other Wilson scorers in the double-digit win were Terri McCullah with seven, Hailie Cargola and Emma Sparkman four each, Raven Cargola and Autumn Barnard three apiece, and Lillianna Cargola two.

Mason's top scorer were Alyssa Berryhill with 17 and Nevaeh Switch with 12.

In Monday's boys showdown against Mason, the Tigers trailed 13-10 after one and 33-23 at halftime. The Wilson squad took the third period by a slim 16-13 margin to cut the deficit to seven, 49-36, with eight minutes left in regulation.

The Tigers tallied 17 points in the final frame, but were matched point-for-point by the host Eagles to suffer the 63-56 setback. Josiah Sellers led the Tigers in scoring with 19 points. Malik Thompson was next in the scoring department for Wilson with 16 points. Other scorers for the Tigers in the loss were Michael McKinney with nine, Cobey Sellers six, John Berryhill four, and Wyatt Danker two.

Mason's top scorer was Cole Beets with a team-best 19 points. Other double-digit scorers for the host Eagles were Hunter Hodges with 18 and Jake Weaver and Cody Hicks with 12 each.

In Tuesday's girls battle with Butner, the Lady Tigers took the opening quarter by a 12-5 margin, then outscored the host Lady Eagles by a 17-6 margin in the second stanza to go into the intermission with a commanding 29-11 advantage.

The Wilson squad came out of the final two frames with margins of 16-6 and 13-7, respectively, to come away with the convincing 58-24 decision.

The top scorer for the victorious Lady Tigers was Ashton Been with a game-high 25 points. Raven Cargola also reached double figures for Wilson with a 13-point performance.

The remainder of the Wilson scoring against Butner were Terri McCullah with seven, Autumn Barnard four, Lillianna Cargola three, and Hailie Cargola, Kassidy Morris, and Emma Sparkman two each.

The top scorer for Butner was Allie Harrison with 11.

In Tuesday's boys contest with Butner, the Tigers were outscored 21-14 in the first period, then were edged 20-17 in the second stanza to trail by ten, 41-31, at the intermission.

The Wilson squad were doubled up 20-10 in the third quarter to go into the final eight minutes of action down by 20, 61-41. The Tigers only managed a 17-14 advantage in the final frame to drop the road contest by a 75-58 decision.

Michael McKinney was tops for Wilson with a game-high 28 points. Malik Thompson also reached double figures for the Tigers with 22. The rest of the Wilson scoring came on six points by Cobey Sellers and two points by Josiah Sellers.

Butner's leading scorer was Deonte Mason with 22, followed by Nate Harrison with 17 and Cy Fitzgerald with 11.
