One of the greatest honors I have as a member of Congress is nominating individuals to our country’s well respected service academies. Attending a U.S. service academy is an invaluable experience that shapes young men and women into strong leaders and military officers. Nominations are available for the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Our country’s service academies prepare young people to serve as commissioned officers in various branches of the armed forces. Students undergo intense academic work, physical training, and character development that gets them ready for military service. Upon graduation, individuals receive a bachelor’s degree and are commissioned as military officers, with exceptions.

Service academies look to recruit the best and brightest that show they are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. Students typically start academy applications during their junior year of high school, but earlier is always better.

I had the honor of nominatingAnnalise Crockett of Broken Arrow to the Air Force Academy, where she is currently in her first year. Annalise applied because she wanted more than the typical college experience and felt like there were more opportunities at the academy. The structure and academic rigor was exactly what she was looking for. She is learning Russian and taking Judo this semester. Her advice to students who are thinking about applying is not to underestimate yourself and if you work hard, there is no reason you can’t make it.

To request a nomination for a service academy from my office, please visitwww.Mullin.House.Gov/ServiceAcademyand fill out the Academy Application and the Online Form. There are two ways to submit an application: send the application via e-mail toMullin.Academies@mail.house.gov or mail a printed application to my Muskogee Office at3109 Azalea Park Drive, Muskogee, OK 74401. All applications must be filled out and returned to my Muskogee office by Wednesday, November 21, 2018.

Receiving a nomination from a congressional office is just the first step in the process of attending a service academy. A nomination does not guarantee admission. If an individual receives a nomination from my office to a service academy, the next step is to receive an appointment from that service academy. After receiving a nomination, the individual will be put into a pool of nominees. From there, the service academies will reach out to offer an appointment, or an offer of admission.

Please share this information with anyone you know who may be interested in joining a service academy. If you have any questions about the application, nomination, or appointment process, please call my Muskogee office at (918) 687-2533 for more information. My team and I are here to assist you in any way possible.
