Knights finish 17th at state cross country meet

SHAWNEE - The Henryetta Golden Knight cross country team came away with a 17th-place finish at last Saturday's Class 3A state cross country championships at the Gordon Cooper Technology Center.

SHAWNEE - The Henryetta Golden Knight cross country team came away with a 17th-place finish at last Saturday's Class 3A state cross country championships at the Gordon Cooper Technology Center.

The Knights finished with 483 points, missing a Top 15 finish by more than 100 points.

Okmulgee County mate, Beggs, finished 21st overall with 587 team points.

Marietta swept the team championships in Class 3A last Saturday. The Indians finished with 58 points, followed by the Kiefer Trojans in second with 106 points. Tahlequah Sequoyah was third in the boys standings with 107 points, followed by Marlow in fourth with 123 points and Community Christian in fifth with 147 points.

In the girls team standings, Marietta finished with 54 total points, followed by Tahlequah Sequoyah in second with 89 points.

The rest of the Top 5 teams in the girls standings last Saturday were Dove Science in third with 155 points, Cascia Hall in fourth with 180 points, and Alva in fifth with 187 points.

Comanche's Jaylee Miller captured the individual state championship in the girls division at last Saturday's state meet, edging Cascia Hall's Sophie Pazzo for the top individual honor.

The other Top 10 individual finishers were Danica Johnson of Tahlequah Sequoyah in third, Kaelyn Dobbins and Mandy Sykora of Marietta in fourth and fifth, respectively, Emily Smith of Holdenville in sixth, Daisy Enriquez of Dove Science in seventh, Korie Kizarr of Marlow in eighth, Vaness Rodriguez of Marietta in ninth, and Asa Robbins of Tahlequah Sequoyah in 10th.

The Henryetta Lady Knight cross country team had two representatives in the girls division last Saturday - freshman Alyssa Collett and junior Bayliegh Nye. Collett finished 51st individually with a time of 14:04.7, while Nye was 107th overall with a time of 14:55.5.

In the boys division, Marietta's Zane Nutter edged teammate Preston Whisenhunt for the individual state championship.

The other Top 10 individual finishers were Chisholm's Carlos Vallejo in third, Little Axe's Agustin Lopez in fourth, Kiefer's Phoenix Randelman in fifth, Marietta's Danny Sanchez in sixth, Sulphur's Caleb Pierce in seventh, Comanche's Landon Ellis in ninth, and Marietta's Chase Waterhouse in 10th.

Sophomore Austin Green paced the Knights at the state meet, finishing 47th overall with a time of 19:20.6.

Green's teammate, Keaton Lollis - a junior, finished 84th individually with a time of 20:17.3

The remainder of the individual placements for the Knights at the state meet were seniors Dalton Key and Garett Witt in 132nd and 133rd, respectively, freshman Grant Holder in 147th, and sophomore Riley Floyd in 156th.

Okmulgee senior Jayden Watkins was the top runner for Okmulgee County, finishing eight in a field of 159 runners from more than 25 different schools, in the Boys 5k race. Watkins, who made his fourth-straight appearance at the state meet, earned his fourth-consecutive All-State selection with the eighth-place finish. Watkins also finished eighth last year after placing 34th and fourth, respectively, in his first two trips to the state cross country championships.

Watkins crossed the finish line in a time of 17:43.0, missing a Top 5 finish by 11.8 seconds.

Jordan Smith led the Demons with an 85th-place finish with a time of 20:21.7.

The other Beggs runners competing at the state meet last Saturday were Wyatt Reed (112th), Jesse Pendergrass (154th), Mason Pollard (157th), and Roderick Harp (159th).
