DEWAR - The Dewar Dragon varsity football team ended their non-district schedule on a sour note last Friday night at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium. After winning their first four non-district games of the 2018 season, the Dragons (4-1) suffered their first loss of the year last Friday - a 50-38 setback to the visiting Davenport Bulldogs. The Dewar gridiron squad will look to get back to their winning ways this Friday night when they begin district play with a trip to Cave Springs and a meeting with the Cave Springs Hornets. Kickoff for Friday's B-4 opener against Cave Springs is set for 7:30 p.m. in Bunch, Oklahoma. In last Friday's non-district finale against Davenport, the Dragons got the scoring started in the first quarter on a 19-yard pass from Joey Fowler to Braxton Loyd. The duo then hooked up on the conversion attempt to put Dewar in front by an 8-0 margin after the first 12 minutes of action. Davenport got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a 6-yard run by Stevie Orr. The try for two was unsuccessful, keeping the host Dragons in front by two, 8-6. The visitors took over the lead at 14-8 later in the second quarter on a 63-yard TD pass from Orr to Austin Harrison. Gabe Vail's successful 2-point run gave Davenport the 6-point advantage. Orr's 36-yard scamper in the second stanza extended the Davenport lead to 20-8, then the Dragons ended the first-half scoring with a 35-yard TD pass from Fowler to Rhett Whitlow. Fowler then ran in the conversion attempt to send the game into the halftime break with Dewar trailing by four, 20-16. The Dragons regained the lead at 24-20 in the third quarter on a 20-yard pass from Fowler to James Brison. Fowler's successful conversion run gave Dewar the 4-point advantage. Fowler's 20-yard TD pass to Loyd, followed by Kameron Wadley's successful conversion run, later in the third quarter increased the Dewar lead to 32-20. Back-to-back TD runs of 6 and 20 yards, respectively, by Orr capped off the third-quarter scoring. Orr completed the pass to Kyle Hobill on the first conversion attempt to make it a 32-28 contest, then found Vail on the conversion pass attempt following the second score to make it a 36-32 advantage for Davenport, heading into the final 12 minutes of regulation. The scoring in the final stanza began with Fowler and Loyd hooking up on a 79-yard aerial strike. The pass attempt on the conversion try was no good, giving Dewar a narrow 38-36 advantage. A 43-yard TD pass from Orr to Cal Harelson put Davenport in front for good, 42-38, then Orr added a 33-yard run and successful conversion run later in the fourth to hand the Dragons the 50-38 defeat. ---Davenport 50, Dewar 38 Davenport - 0 - 20 - 16 - 14 (50) Dewar -8- 8-16- 6 (38)
