For many years, our teachers have faced budget cuts with limited availability to acquire much-needed supplies for their classrooms.
After the 10-day teacher strike at the Capitol in April, an agreement was finally made to increase salaries and state funding for education.
Nearly two weeks ago, the majority of Okmulgee County classes begain the 2018-2019 school year.
Earlier this month, First Family Federal Credit Union (FFFCU) locations announced plans to aid teachers with needed supplies with a Giving Tree at all of the business locations (Henryetta, Okmulgee, Checotah and McAlester).
Area teachers filled out their wish list on FFFCU’s apples.
Members of the public were encouraged to visit FFFCU and pick out an apple for donations.
Requested items from teachers varied from markers and copy paper to larger items such as calculators and CD players.
As of today-Aug. 29, there are still around 40 apples left on the tree for surrounding schools including Henryetta, Dewar, Wilson, Okmulgee, Graham-Dustin, Morris, Ryal and Schulter.
Donations should be returned, along with the apple list, by this Friday, Aug. 31 to FFFCU locations.
For more information about the Giving Trees, please contact FFFCU at 918-652-4407 or Okmulgee County residents can visit the local location at 402 E. Main in Henryetta.
