The 2018 varsity football season is just around the corner.

A handful of teams across Oklahoma will begin their gridiron campaigns next Friday (August 24) as part of 'Zero Week'.

Those teams that will not start 2018 during 'Zero Week' will kick off their seasons the following week (August 30-31).

Two of Okmulgee County's six varsity football teams will be among the few that will start their seasons next Friday. The Beggs Golden Demons will kick off 2018 at home against the Langston-Hughes Academy Scholars, while the Wilson Tigers will host the Eagle Point Eagles in their season opener.

The other four county gridiron squads - Okmulgee, Morris, Henryetta, and Dewar - will begin 2018 the following week. The Okmulgee Bulldogs will start 2018 in Beggs against their county rivals, while the Dewar Dragons will travel to Strother for their season opener. The Morris Eagles and Henryetta Golden Knights will meet up in Henryetta next Friday to renew their gridiron rivalry.

Before the 2018 season begins, all six county teams, as well as the other Oklahoma high school football squads, will compete in preseason scrimmages this Friday.

Okmulgee and Dewar will host their first preseason scrimmages of 2018, while the other four county teams will be on the road for their preseason scrimmages.

The Bulldogs will welcome Gore, Wilburton, and Ketchum to historic Harmon Field on Friday for a 4-team preseason scrimmage that was originally scheduled to take place in Gore, but was moved to Okmulgee due to Gore's field not being playable due to heavy rainfall earlier in the week. The Bulldogs' other preseason scrimmage of 2018 will be held next Friday (August 24) at home against Oklahoma City Douglass.

The Dragons' first preseason scrimmage will take place at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium and will also be a 3-team event, as Keota and Yale will be the two opponents for the Dewar squad.

The Beggs Golden Demons will head to Verdigris this Friday for their only preseason scrimmage of 2018, while the Morris Eagles will travel to Eufaula to battle the Eufaula Ironheads in their only preseason scrimmage of the new campaign.

The Henryetta Golden Knights' first preseason scrimmage will take place in Mounds this Friday night. The Knights will then host Eufaula next Thursday in their final tune-up before hosting their arch rivals from Morris in the season opener the following Friday.

The Wilson Tigers will begin their third year of existence this Friday at Porum. The battle with the Porum Panthers will be the only preseason scrimmage for the Tigers in 2018.

All six scrimmages are set to get underway at 6 p.m.
