A young man is dead in a drowning incident Wednesday afternoon at the Okmulgee Lake.
The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Okmulgee County resident Cody Herndon.
Okmulgee police responded to a report of a possible drowning at the Okmulgee Lake recreational area.
According to Chief Joe Prentice, the OPD received a report of a possible drowning in the Pin Oak Landing swimming area on the lake.
Witnesses told authorities that a man swimming in the area began to struggle. As other swimmers tried to reach him to give assistance, he went under and did not resurface.
“Okmulgee officers searched the area the man was last seen with sonar equipment,” the chief said. “Once they had the location of the man's body, a diver made the recovery.”
Numerous county and city agencies assisted at the scene with the recovery effort.
