PRESTON - Henryetta freshman pitcher Avery Miller had a memorable high school debut here Monday evening.

Miller tossed a 1-hit, complete-game, shutout against the host Preston Lady Pirates on Monday in the Lady Knights' 2018 fastpitch softball season opener. The freshman right-hander struck out three in her four-inning, complete-game, decision.

While Miller kept the Preston hitters in check in the circle, the Henryetta offense erupted for 13 runs on 13 hits in four innings, giving new head coach Ryan Swallow his first coaching win at HHS. Swallow comes to Henryetta after having success for several years at Beggs.

The Lady Knights, who featured five 'rookies' in Monday's season opener, returned to action on Tuesday, traveling to Okmulgee for a county showdown with the host Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs.

Following Tuesday's county contest in Okmulgee, the Henryetta ladies will head to Beggs this Friday and Saturday to compete in the annual Beggs Fastpitch Softball Festival.

Friday's games at Beggs featuring the Lady Knights will be 1:30 p.m. against Liberty on the South Field and 6 p.m. against Red Oak on the North Field. Saturday's festival games for Henryetta will be 10 a.m. against Tishomingo on the North Field, 11:30 a.m. against Spiro on the South Field, and 1 p.m. against Tishomingo on the South Field.

In Monday's season opener, the Lady Knights got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the top of the first. The first run of the new season came on an RBI groundout by Miller. The second HHS run of the frame came on a 2-out RBI single to left by Lexi Lollis.

In the top of the third, the Henryetta squad extended their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the frame. Kasedi Gobin, another Henryetta 'rookie' roped an RBI double to left to score courtesy runner Brittani Hembree to make it a 3-0 contest. Gobin crossed the plate three batters later to push the HHS lead to 4-0, scoring on a passed ball when Kaylie Hamric drew a 1-out walk. Hamric later came across with the fifth Henryetta run of the contest on an RBI groundout by senior Jenifer Denton.

Miller's bid for a no-hitter ended with a leadoff single to left in the bottom of the third by Kami Love. Love was erased on the basepaths for the first out of the inning, then Miller retired the next two hitters to keep the shutout bid intact after three innings of action.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Knights turned the 5-run lead into 13, plating eight runs in the frame. The Henryetta squad sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring eight runs on eight hits.

Miller retired the Preston hitters in order in the bottom of the fourth to put the finishing touches on Henryetta's 13-0, season-opening, victory.
