Ensuring the safety of students in our public schools is a tremendous concern.

Henryetta Public Schools will be implementing new safety and security measures and additions for the 2018-2019 school year.

Recently, the school was awarded a title grant that will provide for the addition of a new Resource Officer on campus as well as to fund radio placement in each building, according to Kelly Furer, Henryetta High School (HHS) Principal.

An amount of the grant was unavailable.

The former Henryetta Elementary Principal, Furer said the grant will provide for four off-duty Henryetta Police Department officers to rotate shifts during the Monday through Friday school day throughout the 2018-2019 school year. There will be an officially-uniformed officer on duty on campus each day of the week that will help ensure the safety of students.

According to Furer, access to the building will be limited.

“The purpose of utilizing this grant is the safety and security of our students. Students need to feel safe and secure in order to learn,” Furer said.

In addition to the grant, Furer announced a new HHS Arrival and Dismissal Plan for the drop off and pick up of students.

Parents can drop off and pick up their children at one of two locations - either the south side of the high school (across from the superintendent’s building) at the main entrance or on the west side adjacent to the bus barns. The two gated entryways on the north side of the high school will be locked and will no longer be accessible.

All parents and visitors to the high school will be required to utilize the main (south side) entrance of the building.

A new intercom system is also planned to be installed at the high school that is similar to the system used at the Henryetta Elementary building, Furer said.
