Knights edge rival Eagles

OKMULGEE - The Henryetta Golden Knights and Morris Eagles renewed their basketball rivalry this past Thursday at the Okmulgee Bulldog Summer Basketball League.

The 5-week summer basketball league, which is being held at historic Brock Memorial Gymnasium, also features boys basketball teams from Okmulgee, Beggs, Preston, Dewar, Bristow, Kiefer, and Liberty (Mounds).

The county teams met three times during the 2017-18 season with Henryetta taking the season series 2-1. The first meeting last year came January 19 in the consolation finals of the annual Muscogee (Creek) Nation Okmulgee County Basketball Tournament with the Knights coming away with the victory, defeating the Eagles 76-70 in overtime.

The Eagles took the second meeting January 23 in Morris with a 59-40 decision.

Henryetta came out of the 'rubber match' February 13 in Henryetta by a slim 36-34 margin to take the season series from their rivals.

In last Thursday's summer league meeting, the Knights held off a late rally in the second 20-minute session to walk away with a 39-36 decision.

Henryetta came out of the 'first half' with a slim 20-17 advantage, then both county squads emerged from the 'second half' with 19 points apiece to award the Knights with the 3-point victory.

In other summer league action in Okmulgee last Thursday, Okmulgee rallied to defeat Wewoka 52-44, Beggs routed Kiefer 72-46, and Bristow downed Preston 84-55.

The two county squads will return to Okmulgee this Thursday for more summer league action.

This Thursday's summer league schedule at Brock Gym will be as follows:

• Wewoka vs Henryetta; 4 p.m.

• Liberty vs Henryetta; 5 p.m.

• Morris vs Preston; 6 p.m.

• Wewoka vs Dewar; 7 p.m.

• Bristow vs Okmulgee; 8 p.m.
