Knights finish third at tennis regionals

HENRYETTA - The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity tennis team came away with a third-place finish at the Class 4A regional tennis tournament this past Friday.

The Knights finished the regional tournament with a team total of 24 points and will send three of their four groups to this weekend's Class 4A state tennis championships at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center in Oklahoma City.

The No. 2 Doubles team of Jarett Day and Tyger Freeman paced the HHS net squad with a runner-up finish at Monday's regional tournament.

Keaton Lollis in No. 1 Singles and the duo of Colten Wion and Jordan Knox in No. 1 Doubles will be joining Day and Freeman at this weekend's state tennis tournament in OKC. Lollis and the No. 1 Doubles team both came away with third-place finishes at Monday's regional tournament.

Kevin Escobedo suffered back-to-back losses in No. 2 Singles action to just miss a chance at qualifying for the state tennis championships this weekend.

Escobedo dropped a straight-set (6-2, 6-2) decision to Victory Christian's Josh Hunt in his opening-round contest, then fell to Beggs' Connor McNabb in a 3-set battle - 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 - to end his regional tournament participation.

In No. 1 Singles action, Lollis suffered a 3-set loss to Wagoner's Michael Corn - 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 - then rebounded with a straight-set (6-0, 6-3) win over Okmulgee's Josiah Padfield to reach the Play-In match against Seminole's Andrew Choate.

Lollis guaranteed his spot in this weekend's state tournament with a victory over Choate in straight sets - 7-5, 6-0 - to advance to the third-place match against Beggs' Aydon Andrews, whom Lollis defeated in straight sets - 6-4, 6-3 to finish third in No. 1 Singles.

In No. 1 Doubles, Wion and Knox received a first-round bye, then earned a straight-set (6-0, 6-0) win over Seminole's Choate and Fraire in the quarterfinal round.

The Henryetta duo dropped a 3-set battle with Byng's Goodman and Tiger in the semifinals. The Knight duo took the opening set by a 6-2 margin, then suffered setbacks in the final two sets by margins of 6-3, 7-6, respectively, to fall into the Play-In match against the Okmulgee duo of Gallup and Foster.

Wion and Knox took the county meeting in straight sets - 6-2, 6-0 - to punch their ticket to the state tennis tournament. The Henryetta duo ended their reigonal tournament participation with a straight-set (6-2, 6-1) victory over Wagoner's Dumond and Mayfield in the third-place match.

In No. 2 Doubles action, the tandem of Day and Freeman took their opening-round match against Victory Christian's Cox and Brennfield in straight sets - 6-1, 6-0, then found themselves in the championship match by defeating Wagoner's Dearman and Drake in straight sets - 6-1, 6-3.

In the championship match, the Henryetta duo suffered a 3-set loss to Grove's Crawford and Rosiere. Grove took the first set by a 6-4 margin, while Day and Freeman evened the match with a 6-3 victory in the second set. The Knight tandem finished with the runner-up medals after dropping the final set by a 6-3 margin.

The Class 4A state tennis championships at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center is set to get underway Friday at 10:30 a.m. with No. 1 Singles action. Doubles action will get started at 11:45 a.m. Friday.
