HENRYETTA - The Henryetta Golden Knights suffered back-to-back losses last Thursday to make an early exit from the 34th Annual Joe Fowler Dewar Gumbo Classic baseball tournament.

The Knights' first setback of the tournament came against the Weleetka Outlaws by an 11-2 margin in an opening-round contest at the Henryetta high school baseball field.

The run-rule loss dropped the Henryetta squad into an elimination game against the Allen Mustangs, who suffered an opening-round loss to Kiefer in the tournament opener last Thursday in Dewar.

The Knights led the Mustangs 3-2 after four innings, then watched as Allen tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth and took the lead at 5-3 in the seventh.

The Henryetta squad went in order in their final two at-bats to suffer the 5-3 defeat.

The 0-2 record at the Gumbo Classic puts the Knights at 8-7 on the year, heading into Tuesday's home game against 3A No. 3 Beggs. Tuesday's county battle with the Demons is the only scheduled game for the Dirtbags this week.

Henryetta will have a full slate of action next week, beginning with a home game against Kellyville next Monday at 5 p.m. The other two scheduled games for HHS next week feature road trips to Holdenville next Tuesday and Morris next Thursday. The Knights will close out their regular-season schedule April 23 at Okemah.

In last Thursday's opening-round meeting with Weleetka, the Knights drew first scoring blood with a pair of runs in the top of the second for a 2-0 advantage.

Weleetka took over the lead at 3-2 with three runs in the home half of the inning, then added three in the third and five in the fourth to hand the Henryetta squad the 11-2, run-rule, loss.

Jared Montgomery got the start on the mound for Henryetta and was saddled with the pitching loss. The junior right-hander allowed six runs on seven hits, striking out one, walking two, and hitting a batter in three innings of work.

Jean Pixler worked the fourth in relief, allowing five runs on one hit with one strikeout and one walk in his one inning of work.

The Knights were held to just two base hits in the contest - both singles. The two hits came off the bats of Ethan Wincle and Jeremiah Boyles.

Other baserunners for Henryetta against Weleetka were Montgomery (error), Wincle (hit by pitch), Seth Munoz (error, RBI hit by pitch), Drew Brown (RBI walk, error), Andrew Morris (2 walks), and Jerad Fife (walk).

In the elimination game against Allen, the Mustangs got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the top of the first.

The Knights broke onto the scoreboard with a run in the last of the second, then tallied a run in each of the third and fourth innings to take over the lead at 3-2 after four innings of action.

Allen plated a run in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 3-3.

After a scoreless sixth kept the score deadlocked at 3-3, the Mustangs tallied a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to go back in front, 5-3, heading into the final half-inning of regulation.

The Knights were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to come up on the short end of a 5-3 outcome.

Drew Brown went the distance on the mound for Henryetta and was saddled with the pitching loss. The junior hurler gave up five runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking one in seven innings of work.

The Knights finished with six hits in the contest, led by Brown and Seth Munoz, who both went 2 for 4 at the plate with a pair of singles. Munoz drove in one of the three Henryetta runs in the contest with an RBI single in the fourth.

The other three base hits for the Knights against Allen came on a single by Jeremiah Boyles and RBI singles by Jared Montgomery and Tate Wisdom.

Other Henryetta hitters to reach base in the contest were Andrew Morris (hit by pitch), Nathan Welch (walk), and Jerad Fife (walk).
