Dewar splits recent home action

DEWAR - The Dewar varsity basketball teams played host to Strother and Hanna last weekend to close out a 4-game schedule.

The Dewar squads suffered a pair of setbacks to the Strother Yellowjackets and Lady Yellowjackets last Thursday, then earned a pair of blowout victories over the visiting Hanna Dragons and Lady Dragons.

In Thursday's home battle with Strother, the Lady Dragons fell to 10-8 on the year with a 60-47 loss to the Lady Yellowjackets, who are coached by former Henryetta girls basketball coach Kolby Johnson, in the opening contest. The Dragons dropped to 13-5 on the season with a heartbreaking 54-53 setback in the nightcap.

In Friday's home showdown with Hanna, the host Dewar ladies earned their 11th win of the season with a 52-16 rout of the visiting Lady Dragons. In the nightcap, the Dewar gentlemen got back on the winning side with a 75-36 victory to complete the home sweep of Hanna.

The Dewar squads were back in action on Monday with a county showdown against the Wilson Tigers and Lady Tigers at Wilson High School, then traveled to Crowder on Tuesday for a meeting with the Crowder Demons and Demonettes.

The Dragons and Lady Dragons closed out the week on Thursday at home against Watts. Thursday's home game is set to get underway at 6:30 p.m. with girls action, followed by the boys game at approximately 8 p.m.

Below are summaries from last Thursday and Friday's home games against Strother and Hanna.

Thursday, January 25

Girls Game

Strother 60, Dewar 47

The Lady Dragons came out of the opening frame with a narrow 16-15 advantage. Strother took a 38-27 lead into halftime after outscoring the Dewar ladies 23-11 in the second period. The deficit increased to 20 points, 51-31, with eight minutes remaining in regulation after the Lady Dragons were outscored 13-4 in the third quarter. The Dewar ladies attempted to overcome the huge deficit in the final quarter, but managed only a 16-9 advantage in the final stanza to come up on the short end of a 60-47 outcome.

Dewar was led in scoring by Skye Been, who finished with a team-best 19 points. Skylar Randall also reached double digits in the home setback with 10. Other Lady Dragon scorers against Stother included KiKi Carter with seven, Noelani Corbin five, and Savannah Been and Morgan Britt three apiece.

Stother's top scorer was Laken Waller with a game-high 22 points. Alyieah Lena and Kylie Wolfe also recorded double-digit totals for the visitors with 11 and 10, respectively.

Boys Game

Strother 54, Dewar 53

The Dragons took the opening frame by a 17-13 margin. The Dewar gentlemen were outscored 15-7 in the second stanza to go into the intermission down by four, 28-24. The Dragons knotted the score at 41-41 after outscoring the Yellowjackets 17-13 in the third period and tallied 12 points in the final quarter. The fourth-quarter total was not enough, however, as Strother put up 13 points in the final eight minutes of action to hand the host Dragons the 54-53 setback.

The top scorer for the Dewar gentlemen in the home contest was Brock Hicks with a 14-point performance. Hicks was joined in double figures by Jentry Brison, who finished with 12 points. Other Dewar scorers against Strother were Joey Fowler with nine, Dustin Blood eight, Baylor Selby six, and Kelby Carter four.

Strother was led in scoring by Bryce Conley with a game-high 27 points. Dakota Roach also reached double digits in scoring for the visitors with 16.

Friday, January 26

Girls Game

Dewar 52, Hanna 16

The Lady Dragons took the opening frame by a 10-9 margin, then turned a close contest into a rout, outscoring the visitors 15-2 in the second quarter for a 25-11 halftime lead. The Dewar ladies closed out the 36-point win by outscoring Hanna 27-5 in the final two frames to walk off their home floor with the 52-16 decision.

Savannah Been led a balanced offensive attack for Dewar with a game-high 15 points. Other Lady Dragon players to tally points against Hanna were Skye Been and Morgan Britt with eight points each, Noelani Corbin seven, Skylar Randall six, and Autumn Campbell and KiKi Carter four apiece.

Miranda Layman and Amazing Cannon led Hanna with six points each.

Boys Game

Dewar 75, Hanna 36

The host Dragons led 18-6 after one and 45-18 at the intermission. The Dewar gentlemen outscored Hanna 17-9 and 15-9, respectively, in the second half to walk away with the 75-36 victory.

Brock Hicks and Joey Fowler led Dewar in scoring with 12 points apiece. Dustin Blood and Jentry Brison just missed scoring in double figures for the host Dragons with nine points each. Brett Hays was next for Dewar with eight, followed by Kelby Carter with seven, Micah Cloud, James Brison, and Baylor Selby five apiece, and Brandon Atoigue two.

Jared Shepherd was tops for Hanna with a game-high 13 points.
