The Dewar Dragon varsity football team put up a lot of points in 2017.

The Dragons tallied a total of 596 yards in 11 games this season - an average of 54.2 points per game.

Defensively, the Dewar squad allowed only 278 points scored in 11 games - an average of 25.3 points per game.

Three of the Dragons' games in 2017 ended before the fourth quarter with two ending at halftime due to the 45-point mercy rule that is instilled in 8-man football.

The Dewar squad finished 2017 with a 9-2 record and were 8-1 in regular-season play.

The Dragons opened the season by outscoring their first four opponents by a combined 234-50 and featured wins over Wilson (78-6), Gans (51-12), Allen (45-18), and Coyle (60-14) with the wins over Wilson and Coyle ending on the 45-point mercy rule.

After taking a week off September 22 due to playing the Wilson Tigers on 'Zero Week', the Dragons battled the Davenport Bulldogs in Week 5, falling to the Bulldogs by a 44-42 decision. That was the only time the Dewar squad suffered defeat in the regular-season, winning its final four games by a combined 218-124.

The 4-game win streak to close out the regular-season schedule featured wins over Wetumka (30-14), Destiny Christian (42-40), Weleetka (64-36), and Canadian (82-34).

The Dragons earned a spot in the postseason without playing a single down of football, as Haileyville folded its football program for the 2017 season, meaning that the 5-team B-6 district became a 4-team district and awarded the remaining four teams automatic playoff berths before the season even began.

With the lone loss being in non-district action, the Dewar squad finished its district schedule with a spotless 3-0 record, defeating its three district opponents by a combined 176-84.

The Dragons needed just two quarters to advance in the Class B playoffs, defeating the Strother Yellowjackets 46-0 in their opening-round contest.

The Dewar squad looked to be on its way to its first quarterfinal appearance since 2015 but a kickoff return late in the fourth quarter against Prue in the second round ended the Dragons' state championship dreams, as Dewar fell to the visiting Rockets 60-56 to finish 9-2 on the year.

Offensively in 2017, the Dragons amassed 5,921 yards of total offense on 653 plays - an average of 538.3 yards per game. The Dewar offense finished with 3,816 yards rushing on 484 carries and 53 TDs - an average of 346.9 yards per game - and completed 98 of 169 passes for 2,105 yards with five interceptions and 23 TDs - an average of 191.4 yards per game.

The top two offensive performers for the Dragons in 2017 were senior tailback Boogie Brown and freshman quarterback Joey Fowler.

Brown was the top rusher for the Dragons in 2017. Brown finished with 2,430 yards on 273 carries and 28 TDs. Brown's top rushing performance was a 341-yard total in the second-round loss to Prue.

Fowler enjoyed an outstanding 'rookie' year at the helm of the Dewar offensive unit. Fowler completed 95 of 160 passes for 2,080 yards with 23 TDs and four interceptions in 11 games. Fowler's top passing game was a 380-yard, 5-touchdown, performance against Canadian. The freshman signal caller also rushed 132 times for 796 yards and 17 TDs in 2017.
