HENRYETTA - The Wilson varsity basketball teams hosted the Mason Eagles and Lady Eagles on Monday evening.

The Tigers held off a late charge by the visiting Eagles to stay perfect on the season, while the Lady Eagles sputtered offensively in the fourth quarter in the opening contest to suffer a 50-33 setback to the Mason ladies.

The Wilson squads were back in action on Tuesday evening at home against the Butner Eagles and Lady Eagles. See Friday's Free-Lance for complete details of Tuesday's home contest against Butner.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers will close out the week this Friday on the road at Schulter and a rematch of last Monday's season opener with the Schulter Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs. Friday's county battle will get started with the girls game at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys contest at approximately 8 p.m.

After the county showdown with Schulter, the Wilson squads will host their annual Wilson Tiger Classic basketball tournament next week (December 4-9). See Friday's Free-Lance for a preview of the 2017 Wilson Tiger Classic.

In Monday's girls game, the Lady Tigers trailed 18-8 after the first eight minutes of action, then came out of the second stanza with a 13-9 margin to go into the halftime break down by six, 27-21.

The Wilson ladies cut the deficit to five, 38-33, heading into the final frame after edging the visitors 12-11 in the third period.

The Lady Tiger offense went ice cold from the field in the final quarter, failing to produce any points in the 8-minute period. Mason put up 12 points in the final stanza to hand the Wilson ladies the 50-33 setback.

Most of the Lady Tiger scoring came from 3-point range, as the Wilson squad knocked down eight 3-point bombs in the contest, led by senior Raven Shaw with five. Autumn Barnard accounted for the other three long-distance shots for the Lady Tigers in the contest.

Shaw led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 15, followed by Barnard with nine. Terri McCullah was next for Wilson with six points, followed by Emma Sparkman with two. Ally Neep sank a free throw in the third quarter to round out the Lady Tiger scoring.

Alyssa Berryhill was tops in scoring for Mason with a game-high 18 points, followed by Gannyn Gower with 13.

In the boys contest on Monday, the Tigers came out of the opening frame with a 13-8 advantage. Both teams tallied 12 points in the second period to send the teams to the intermission with Wilson still in front by five, 25-20.

The Wilson gentlemen pushed their lead to double digits in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 22-7 in the frame to take a 47-27 lead into the final eight minutes of regulation.

Mason attempted to make a comeback in the final period, putting up 31 points in the fourth quarter.

The host Tigers tallied 15 points in the final stanza to thwart the comeback, walking away with the narrow 62-58 victory.

Both teams knocked down four 3-pointers in the contest, but Wilson made two more free throws (8 of 14) than the visitors (6-15) and sank one more inside basket - 21 to 20 - than the Eagles for the 4-point difference.

Leading the way offensively for the Tigers was Malik Thompson with a team-best 18 points. Michael McKinney also reached double figures for Wilson in the win, finishing with 10 points. John Berryhill and Kalem Grist just missed double-digit scoring for the Tigers with nine and eight, respectively. Cobey Sellers finished with six points for Wilson, followed by Josiah Sellers with five, Wyatt Danker four, and Gabriel Hebert two.
