Knights dump Haskell, 40-26

Henryetta senior tailback Avery Moore (25) attempts to elude the grasp of a Haskell defender during last Friday’s District 2A-5 battle in Haskell. Moore and the Knights ended an 8-game losing streak with a 40-26 victory over the host Haymakers in the district opener.

HASKELL - The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity football team felt a little case of déjà vu this past Friday night in their District 2A-5 opener against the Haskell Haymakers.

Last year, the Knights dropped their first five games before earning their first win with a 41-6 win over Haskell at historic Cameron Field in Henryetta.

Fast forward 12 months.

In 2017, the Henryetta squad entered last Friday's district opener with an identical 0-5 record and the Haymakers became the first team to be defeated by the Knights, as Henryetta walked off Haskell's home field with a 40-26 victory, snapping the 5-game losing streak to begin 2017.

The 14-point win actually snapped an 8-game losing streak for the Henryetta squad with the last win for the Knights coming in Week 8 of the 2016 campaign - a 56-55 win over Okemah.

The Henryetta gridiron squad will definitely feel a case of déjà vu if they can come away with a win over the Holdenville Wolverines this Friday night in Week 2 of district action.

Last year, the Knights walked off the Wolverines' home field with a 36-30 victory.

This year's district matchup will take place at historic Cameron Field in Henryetta at 7 p.m.

In last Friday's district opener against Haskell, the host Haymakers got on the scoreboard first on a 1-yard TD run by Davian Stafford at the 7:36 mark of the opening quarter.

With 3:40 remaining in the first period, Jarett Day found Jeremiah Boyles on a 4-yard TD pass to knot the score at 6-6.

Haskell went back in front at 12-6 at the 2:06 mark of the first quarter on a 39-yard pass from Tayden Lucero to Jacoby Gouldsby.

The Knights needed just one minute and two seconds to respond, as Seth Munoz rocketed 75 yards to paydirt, tying the game at 12-12 after the first 12 minutes of action.

The only points in the second quarter belonged to the Knights, as Tyler Wilson made good on a 30-yard field goal try with 5:31 left in the first half, putting the visitors in front, 15-12, at the halftime break.

Henryetta expanded its lead to 28-12 after three quarters with a pair of scores in the third. The first HHS tally in the third quarter came on a 6-yard TD run by Day on a QB keeper at 8:48. Wilson's successful PAT kick pushed the Knights' lead to 22-12.

With 5:29 left in the third, Munoz found the end zone for the second time in the contest, scoring on a 37-yard scamper. The PAT kick was no good to make it a 28-12 advantage for the Henryetta squad, heading into the final frame.

Avery Moore's 1-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter pushed the HHS lead to 34-12, then Haskell cut the deficit to 34-20 at the 10:43 mark on a 6-yard TD run by Lucero and a 2-point conversion run by Gouldsby.

Munoz capped off his 3-touchdown night at 7:50 of the fourth on a 1-yard TD run. The run attempt on the conversion try was unsuccessful, putting the Knights in front by 20 points, 40-20.

With nine seconds left in regulation, Haskell tallied one final score, as Lucero connected with Kyle Burris on a 4-yard TD pass. The pass attempt on the conversion try was no good, making the final outcome, 40-26, in favor of the Henryetta Golden Knights.

Munoz led the rushing attack for Henryetta with a season-best 186 yards on 14 carries and three TDs. Moore was next in the rushing department with 69 yards on 19 carries and one score.

Day was 11 of 17 passing for 172 yards and one touchdown, while Boyles was the leading receiver for Henryetta with three catches for 107 yards and one score. Munoz caught five passes for 40 yards in the district win.
