Dewar begins second half with losses to New Lima

WEWOKA - The Dewar high school varsity basketball teams opened the second half of their 2016-17 season this past Tuesday against the New Lima Falcons and Falconettes.
The Dewar squads dropped the road meeting with New Lima with the Lady Dragons finding themselves on the short end of a 68-44 outcome, while the Dragons fell in a heartbreaker 58-55 to the host Falcons in the nightcap.
The Dewar cagers were back in action on Thursday as they began play at the Jim Waller Classic at Moss High School. The Lady Dragons opened tournament play against Maud, while the Dragons went up against Macomb in their opening-round contest on Thursday.
A win on Thursday would put the Dewar squads in the winner's bracket semifinal round Friday evening, while losses on Thursday would drop the DHS cagers into the consolation semifinals on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Dragons will meet either Varnum or Earlsboro on Friday, while the Dragons will battle either Asher or Varnum in Friday's tournament action.
The final day of tournament action will be held Saturday, beginning with the girls seventh-place game at 10 a.m. and concluding with the boys championship game at 8:30 p.m.
The other teams in the tournament on the girls side include Asher, Vanoss, Macomb, and Sasakwa, while the other boys teams at the 3-day event are Earlsboro, Sasakwa, Maud, and Vanoss' JV.
Following the Moss Tournament, the Dewar squads will return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Wetumka for a showdown with the Wetumka Chieftains and Lady Chieftains, then will be at home next Friday, as the Weleetka Outlaws and Lady Outlaws come to town for a Crossroads Conference meeting at the Clell W. Henson Fieldhouse.
In Tuesday's girls contest, the scoring went back and forth in the opening period with New Lima coming out of the frame with a narrow 16-14 advantage.
In the second stanza, the Dewar offense went cold, tallying only six points in the quarter, while New Lima put up 15 for a 31-20 advantage for the host Falconettes.
The Lady Dragons regained some of their offensive power in the third period, but were outscored 15-12 in the stanza to trail 46-32 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
The Dewar ladies did their best to overcome the 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but New Lima took the frame by a 22-12 margin to hand the Lady Dragons the 68-44 setback.
DelJah Jackson was tops for Dewar with a game-high 18 points. Other DHS scorers in the loss were Savannah Been with seven, Staejha Mack five, Alisha Hicks, KiKi Carter, and Ashton Been three each, Noelani Corbin and Morgan Britt two apiece, and Skylar Randall one.
The trio of Taegan Freeman, Laura Reffley, and Hayley Madewell led New Lima with 14 points each.
In the boys contest, the Dragons came out of the opening frame with a 13-7 advantage. New Lima cut the Dewar lead to 27-22 at halftime with a 15-14 margin in the second quarter.
The host Falcons took the third period 20-16 to make it a one-point Dewar advantage - 43-42 - with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
The Dragons attempted to keep their narrow lead in the final frame, but were outscored 16-12 to suffer the 58-55 defeat.
Trisdon Brownfield led the way offensively for Dewar with 17 points. Brock Hicks and Bryton Edmundson also found their way into double-digit scoring for the Dragons with 12 and 11,  respectively. Other DHS scorers against New Lima were Jentry Brison and Matt Hicks with four each and Kelby Carter and Dustin Blood three apiece.
Mekki Edwards was tops for the host Falcons with a game-high 24 points. Adrian Daniels also reached double figures for New Lima with 11.
