100 Years Ago (1926)

• Residents expressed regret after learning that one of Henryetta’s largest and most admired furniture stores would be closing. The decision came not from financial trouble but from the business simply outgrowing the local market. Even so, townspeople were relieved to hear that the store’s managers intended to remain in Henryetta. The building, known for its size and beauty, was already being considered for possible conversion into an up-town hotel, a change some believed would benefit the community.

• The district agricultural agent reported encouraging crop conditions, noting that recent storms caused only minor setbacks. Sunshine and warmer weather were expected to help fields recover quickly. State entomologists also found that boll weevils placed in winter test cages had died, suggesting a lighter infestation for the coming season. Farmers were advised to maintain normal cotton acreage, emphasize feed crops and focus on diversified farming to ensure steady returns throughout the year.

• A young Dewar 4‑H member won the junior division of the Ladies Lead Class at the statewide 4‑H and FFA Livestock Show. She presented her registered ewe while wearing a wool outfit she had made herself, and judges scored her on appearance, poise and how well she handled the animal. Her coordinated outfit and careful presentation earned her a trophy from the Oklahoma Sheep and Wool Growers Ladies Auxiliary. She later appeared on television to showcase her winning entry, bringing attention to her hard work and the program that supported her.

• Members of the Sunny Valley Gardeners gathered for their regular meeting, enjoying a program centered on bluebirds and the role of birds throughout history. The group heard how bluebirds nest, why they are considered symbols of happiness and how people have helped them by building nesting boxes and establishing bluebird trails.

• The Henryetta Senior Citizens Center received a generous $5,000 contribution from a local bank to support construction of its new facility. The gift was presented during a well‑attended lunch at the Nutrition Site, where the bank also provided the meal. Leaders explained that the donation would help the center qualify for matching funds and move the project closer to completion.

• A Henryetta car dealer reported that a vehicle taken out for a test drive was returned with its nearly new tires replaced by worn ones, and the spare and jack missing. Police were notified immediately, and an alert was issued for the suspects’ other vehicle. A sheriff ’s deputy soon located the car, and two men were arrested on burglary‑related charges. A young woman involved in the incident was released pending a hearing. The vehicle was impounded as the investigation continued.

• Henryetta native Terry Don West was named to the Bull Riding Hall of Fame, joining a class of celebrated riders and rodeo legends. Known for his powerful rides and resilience through serious injuries, West earned a place among the sport’s most respected figures. He was one of the few riders to successfully stay on the famed bull Bodacious – twice – and his long career as both competitor and instructor secured his standing in rodeo history.
