County wrestlers stay busy with strong showings

Okmulgee County wrestling programs at both the high school and middle school levels have been rolling through a busy stretch of competition, highlighted by strong individual performances, team finishes and continued growth on the mat. From the Gary McKee Bulldog Classic in Okmulgee to the 1st Annual Cherokee County Classic in Tahlequah, local wrestlers have been tested against tough competition – and responded with grit, determination and medals.

— Gary McKee Bulldog Classic draws competitors The Gary McKee Bulldog Classic, held Dec. 5-6 at Okmulgee Brock Gymnasium, once again served as a major early-season measuring stick for area programs. With wrestlers from across the region filling the gym, Okmulgee County teams used the event to sharpen skills and gain valuable mat time as the season moves forward.

— Wilson competes at Cherokee County Classic Wilson’s wrestling program turned in solid efforts at the 1st Annual Cherokee County Classic, competing in both high school and middle school divisions.

In the high school division, Zechariah Tecumseh captured 1st place, finishing the tournament with a perfect 2-0 record. Ethan Carney placed 4th, ending the weekend at 1-2.

In the middle school division, Jordan Rasberry earned 3rd place with a 2-2 record. Evan Hulbutta also took 3rd place, posting a 2-1 record.

Wilson’s mix of podium finishes at both levels reflected the program’s continued development and competitive depth.

— Dragons earn team hardware

The Dewar Dragons delivered an impressive team performance at the Cherokee Classic Wrestling Tournament hosted by Tahlequah Sequoyah. Competing against 13 teams, Dewar finished 3rd overall, a notable accomplishment against strong regional opposition.

The Dragons showcased toughness throughout the weekend, with consistent scoring across weight classes contributing to their high team placement. The finish underscored Dewar’s work ethic and determination as the season builds momentum.

— Morris makes noise at Cherokee County Classic Morris Public Schools had a standout weekend at the 1st Annual Cherokee County Tournament, with multiple wrestlers earning podium finishes and valuable experience.

Chance Rutland placed 1st, while Emmett Moten placed 3rd. Bryce Ragsdale, Hayden Cash and Mekko Haney also finished 4th.

The Eagles battled through tough brackets, showing resilience and intensity in every match.

Morris continued its strong showing with additional medal performances, highlighting both boys and girls competitors.

Chance Rutland placed 1st place twice, while Emmett Moten finished 3rd. Meanwhile, Chyla Marris recently earned silver for the girls team.

With confidence building and consistency improving, the Morris Eagles are establishing themselves as a program to watch as the season progresses.

—- Henryetta earns dual wins

Henryetta wrestling also picked up key victories on Dec. 11, posting wins at both levels. The high school team won 39-21, while junior high edged out a 24-21 victory.

The dual wins reflected balanced lineups and competitive depth for the Knights, especially as younger wrestlers gain experience alongside varsity competitors.

– Look for more wrestling events after the Winter Break is over for area schools.
