The final score won’t show it, but Beggs spent the closing minutes of Friday night’s Class 2A-II playoff opener reminding everyone why no one in their brutally tough district ever took the Golden Demons lightly. Despite falling 49-21 to top-seeded Stroud, Beggs closed the night with a 21-0 fourth-quarter run and enough grit to make the Tigers uncomfortable down the stretch.
But before the late spark, a single first-half moment swung momentum in a way Beggs couldn’t fully recover from.
After Stroud opened the game with a crisp 70-yard touchdown march capped by Jacob Beck’s 31-yard scoring run, Beggs answered with its best drive of the half. Quarterback Ethen Davison found Jordan Wesley for a 41-yard strike across the middle, setting up a deep red-zone opportunity. Facing 4th-and-goal from the 8, Davison again hit Wesley, who alertly pitched the ball to Trey Ross on a hook-and-lateral that appeared destined for a game-tying touchdown. But officials ruled that Ross stepped out at the 3-yard line – a call that halted the momentum Beggs had meticulously built.
Stroud capitalized immediately, driving 97 yards before Beck punched in his second touchdown. A mishandled kickoff on the next possession set up another short field and another Beck score, and suddenly the Golden Demons were staring down a 21-0 deficit that didn’t reflect the competitive flow through much of the first quarter.
Stroud continued to lean on Beck’s speed and the Tigers’ ability to strike quickly, including a 65yard dash and a 58-yard double-pass trick play that stretched the lead to 35-0 at halftime. The Tigers added two more touchdowns in the third – a Gage Bailey 6-yard run and a 15-yard interception return by Trysten Baker – before Beggs slammed the door on the scoring for the rest of the night.
That’s when the Golden Demons’ trademark fight surfaced.
Wesley knocked the ball loose from Beck early in the fourth, and Jason Nethon scooped it and sprinted 30 yards for Beggs’ first score. Nethon followed it with a 50-yard touchdown run on the next possession, and Ross finished the night with a tough 21yard scoring run that showcased the determination Beggs carried despite the uphill battle.
“Hats off to Stroud – they’re a very good football team – but I’m proud of the way our kids battled until the final whistle,” Beggs head coach David Shannon said. “The ball didn’t bounce our way in the first half, but our guys kept playing the next play. I feel blessed to have coached this group of young men in my first year as head coach.”
The Golden Demons’ 6-4 season came against one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A, and the opening round proved the strength of their slate: District 2 teams Davis, Holdenville and Dibble all advanced, leaving Beggs as the only one of the four to draw the top seed in a hostile playoff road environment.
Stroud, the lone 2A-II District 1 team still standing, moves on to host Wyandotte next week.
But Beggs exits the postseason with a performance that, even in defeat, reinforced what defined their season – toughness, resilience and a refusal to quit.
