Open meetings, records seminars offered

Local, county, school and civic organizations are encouraged to attend a series of free seminars this fall focused on Oklahoma’s open meeting and open records laws. The seminars, hosted by Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond’s office in partnership with the Oklahoma Press Association (OPA), provide a valuable opportunity to learn about transparency, accountability, and public access to government.

“These laws are the most potent tools citizens have to hold government accountable,” said Dep- uty General Counsel Thomas R. Schneider, who will present the sessions. “At the same time, this training helps public body members develop a deeper understanding of their responsibilities and the role these acts play in safeguarding democracy.”

Attorney General Drummond, who has made openness and transparency a top priority, emphasized the importance of public access to government actions. “We must ensure that Oklahoma’s public officials are acting openly with honesty and integrity,” he said. “I am pleased to offer this seminar series statewide for every type of public official.”

The seminars are scheduled from 1-4 p.m. at four convenient locations: • Oct. 27: Tulsa Technology Center, Riverside Campus, 801 E. 91st St., Tulsa

• Nov. 3: Sam Noble Museum, 2401 Chautauqua Ave., Norman

• Nov. 17: Meridian Technology Center, 1312 S. Sangre Rd., Stillwater • Dec. 15: Oklahoma Judicial Center, 2100 N. Lincoln Blvd., Oklahoma City Attendance is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required due to high demand. Participants can register at okpress.com/ seminars or by calling OPA at 1-888-815-2672.

Continuing education credits are available for attendees:

• Attorneys can earn three CLE credit hours.

• New school board members can receive three credit hours from the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

• New technology center board members may earn three credit hours from the State Department of Career and Technology Education.

• Law enforcement officials are eligible for three credit hours from the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.

Local government officials, school administrators, law enforcement personnel, journalists, and members of civic organizations are all encouraged to attend this important series to ensure transparency and strengthen public trust in government.
