As Memorial Day approaches, the Henryetta community is coming together to ensure that the sacrifices of fallen military heroes are honored with dignity, respect and solemn remembrance. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 539 and its auxiliary, alongside committed volunteers, are finalizing preparations for the annual Memorial Day observance – a local tradition of reflection and gratitude.
Last weekend, VFW Post 539 Commander Bill Goodner, with sup- port from Senior Vice Commander Hugh “Rooster” Jackson and fellow members Bill Marler, Larry Campbell and Bill Lester, was aided by members of Boy Scout Troop 102 from Okmulgee. Under the guidance of Troop Leader Brandon Gentry, scouts Nylen and Jaxon Gentry, along with Leader Josh Chase and scout Jasper Bagsby, took time on Saturday morning to carefully raise sunken or settled headstones of veterans at Westlawn Cemetery. Their service ensured that the gravesites are respectfully presented in time for the upcoming ceremony.
This year’s Memorial Day Program, organized by VFW Post 539,m will take place on Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. at Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta. The event is open to the public, and residents of all ages are encouraged to attend and pay tribute to those who gave their lives in service to the United States.
On Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m., VFW Post 539 members, auxiliary volunteers and local citizens will place American flags on the graves of military veterans across 12 cemeteries in the area. This longstanding tradition serves as a visible and heartfelt reminder of each veteran’s service and sacrifice. Community members are invited to assist with this important effort. Volunteers of all ages are welcomed, with information and support available through VFW Post 539 leadership.
The Memorial Day program on Monday will include music, ceremonial readings and moments of reflection. Attendees can expect a moving tribute filled with traditional elements and heartfelt observance.
