A display of patriotism, creativity and community support was on full display this spring as VFW Post 539 and its Auxiliary partnered with area schools to recognize young artists and support student opportunities. The partnership between the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Henryetta Public Schools (HPS) continues to be a shining example of how local organizations can uplift and inspire youth. On Tuesday, the VFW honored several local students during their regular meeting.
— Art Contest Highlights Local Talent
Through the VFW Auxiliary’s Illustrating America art contest, students across grade levels were invited to showcase their creativity and patriotism through original artwork. Two Henryetta Elementary School students stood out in the Kindergarten – 2nd Grade division at the local level and received cash awards for their achievements:
• Lily Navas, 1st Grade, 2nd Place
• Kayson Brinkley, 2nd Grade, 3rd Place “These two young artists put their hearts into their work,” school officials said. “We are proud of the time and effort they invested in representing their school and community so well. Congratulations to Lily and Kayson!”
At the high school level, more students from Okmulgee County also received top honors. The local contest winners sponsored by VFW Auxiliary Post 539 were:
• 1st Place: Kylie Brandt, 10th Grade, Schulter School – Awarded $100
• 2nd Place: Damian Smith, 12th Grade, Dewar High School – Awarded $75 Both students were recognized during a special awards presentation hosted by the Auxiliary.
The VFW Post Auxiliary loves seeing the artistic talents of our local youth. Teresa Stevenson, President of the VFW Auxiliary Post 539 and VFW Service Officer Tricia Bear and other members of the Post have expressed their continued commitment to supporting youth, veterans and the broader Henryetta community through events and outreach efforts like these.
“This contest is a way to not only encourage creativity but to connect younger generations with themes of patriotism and community pride.”
— Supporting the Knight Brigade’s Washington, D.C. Journey In another act of generosity, VFW Post 539 recently held a fundraising raffle in support of the Henryetta High School Knight Brigade band. The raffle – featuring a new television as the prize – raised an impressive $3,790. These funds will help cover travel costs as the band prepares to perform in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. later this month.
Band members and HPS staff were invited to the VFW Post for a check presentation and to personally thank members of the VFW and VFW Auxiliary for their hard work in making the raffle a success.
— Grateful for a Meaningful Partnership
Henryetta Public Schools extended its appreciation to VFW Post 539 and the Auxiliary for their ongoing dedication to student enrichment.
“Whether it’s recognizing young artists or sending our band to perform on a national stage, Post 539 continues to be a steadfast partner in our schools,” the district shared. “Their service didn’t end with their military careers – they’ve carried that spirit into our community.”
As the Memorial Day holiday approaches, these efforts serve as a poignant reminder that patriotism is alive and well in Henryetta – and it’s being passed down with care, creativity and community spirit.
