Schulter Elementary students in 2nd and 4th grade recently went on a field trip to Muskogee to see Big Boy, a historic steam engine. Chelsye Brown, 4th grade teacher at Schulter, along with 2nd grade teacher Jamie Brandt, accompanied the students on the excursion.
Big Boy No. 4014 departed on the Heartland of America Tour on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from Cheyenne, Wy. across nine additional states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. The eight-week tour concludes in late October.
In Oklahoma, the train stopped in Claremore, Muskogee and Durant.
Twenty-five Big Boys were built during World War II, but only eight survived. No. 4014 is the only one of the eight still in operation and remains the world’s largest operating steam locomotive.
