Tigers face toughest challenge of season Thursday
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR,

Beggs-Okmulgee county battle to also highlight Week 7 slate

Week 7 of the 2023 varsity football season will see most of the teams in Oklahoma taking the field on Thursday instead of the usual Friday night contests.

The reason for so many Thursday games across the state this week is due to the annual ‘Fall Break’ that lands on the second full week in October every year.

The only Okmulgee County team that will compete on Friday this week will be the Morris Eagles, who are scheduled to travel to Sperry for a District 2A-7 battle with the Sperry Pirates. The reason for the non-Fall Break Thursday contest is that Sperry is not taking a Fall Break in the 2023-2024 school year.

Of the five county teams that will take the field on Thursday, the Wilson Tigers will have the toughest challenge, as they will play host to the Wesleyan Christian Mustangs in a crucial District C-3 contest. Both teams enter the Week 7 showdown with identical 3-0 district records, while Wilson holds the season record edge over Wesleyan Christian by one win, as the Tigers are currently 5-1 on the year, while the Mustangs currently sit at 4-2 in 2023.

The other ‘Fall Break’ Thursday games featuring Okmulgee County teams will see the Beggs Golden Demons and Okmulgee Bulldogs squaring off in a District 2A-7 meeting in Beggs, the Henryetta Golden Knights traveling to Vian for a key District 2A-5 showdown with the Vian Wolverines, and the Dewar Dragons heading to Porum to battle the Porum Panthers in a District B-5 contest.

Below are the outcomes for all six Okmulgee County football teams in Week 6:

• Kiefer 58, Okmulgee 38

• Henryetta 43, Warner 8

• Kansas 37, Beggs 20

• Victory Christian 51, Morris 6

• Dewar 46, Webbers Falls 0

• Wilson 50, Copan 30 Wesleyan Christian enters Thursday’s district battle with a spotless 3-0 district record, having earned wins over Oaks-Mission (21-14), Copan (52-16), and Bluejacket (70-0), respectively. The Mustangs’ other win this season came in the second non-district game of against Claremore Christian – a 47-0 victory for Wesleyan Christian. The two season losses for the Mustangs have come against Webbers Falls (56-27) and Barnsdall (54-7), respectively.

Beggs enters Thursday’s county battle with Okmulgee with a 3-3 season record, 1-2 in district play. The lone district win for the Demons in 2023 came on September 22 at Westville – a 38-16 victory over the host Yellowjackets. Beggs’ two district losses this season have come in back-to-back weeks

– 50-34 to Victory Christian and 37-20 to Kansas. The Bulldogs are currently winless in district play, as well as the 2023 campaign, at 0-3 and 0-6, respectively. Okmulgee’s district losses this season have come against Victory Christian (60-13), Westville

(56-28), and Kiefer (58-38), respectivley.

Vian comes into Thursday’s Week 7 contest with a spotless 3-0 district record and 4-2 overall. The Wolverines’ three district wins this season have come against Warner (48-13), Roland (64-0), and Okemah (41-14), respectively, with the only other Vian win in 2023 came September 1 against the Eufaula Ironheads by a 35-27 margin. The Wolverines’ two defeats this season have come to Washington

(55-13) and Lincoln Christian (55-11), respectively.

Porum is 2-4 on the year and 0-1 in district play, suffering a 50-0 setback to Caddo last Friday at Caddo. The Panthers’ two wins this season have come against South Coffeyville (45-0) and Oaks-Mission (22-16) in the first two games of the

2023 campaign. Besides the shutout loss to Caddo last week, the other setbacks for Porum this season have come against Keota (51-6), Gans (14-12), and Cave Springs (54-52 in OT), respectively.

Sperry enters Friday’s Week 7 contest with a 4-2 season record and 1-2 in district play. The lone district win for the Pirates came last Friday against Westville, defeating the Yellowjackets by a 42-14 margin. The two district losses for Sperry this season have come against Kansas (26-14) and Kiefer

(44-12), respectively. Sperry began the season with three-straight non-district wins over Verdigris (27–

20), Glenpool (41-24), and Vinita (23-14), respectively.
