Bulldogs watch promising 2022 season end with 8-game losing streak

The Okmulgee Bulldog varsity football team saw a promising start to the 2022 season, wining its first two games.

The Bulldogs suffered eight-straight losses during the rest of the regular season to finish with a 2-8 record – their 12-straight losing season.

The last time the Okmulgee squad had a winning regular season was 2016, finishing 5-5 and earning a spot in the playoffs. The Bulldogs dropped their first-round meeting with Berryhill by a 67-0 margin to finish the season with a 5-6 record.

The Bulldogs’ last winning overall season came in 2009 when they finished 6-5 and ended their season in the first round of the playoffs with a 35-14 loss to Cascia Hall.

The Okmulgee squad began the 2022 campaign August 26 with a 20-0 shutout win over the Star Spencer Bobcats in Oklahoma City.

The following week (September 2), the Bulldogs held off a talented Antlers squad in Okmulgee’s home opener, defeating the visiting Bearcats by a 30-20 margin to begin the 2022 season with a 2-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs closed out their non-district schedule September 9 with a trip to Tulsa and a showdown with the Tulsa Central Braves. The Okmulgee squad entered district play with a 42-8 loss to the host Braves squad for the first setback of 2022.

After a Bye Week in Week 3, the Bulldogs opened District 2A-7 play September 23 at home against the Victory Christian Conquerors. The Okmulgee squad suffered its second-straight loss of 2022 in the district opener, falling by a 60-20 decision to the Tulsa private school.

On September 30, the Okmulgee gridiron squad traveled to Westville to battle a new district foe in the Westville Yellowjackets. The Bulldogs battled the host Yellowjackets for four quarters but found themselves on the short end of a 20-18 decision to fall to 0-2 in district play.

The losing streak continued on October 7 with a 59-24 loss to the Kiefer Trojans in Kiefer. The Bulldogs remained winless in district play six days later (October 13) with a 46-16 home loss to county rival Beggs.

The Bulldogs’ dreams of a winning season and playoff appearance in 2022 fell by the wayside with back-to-back district losses to Kansas (13-6) and Sperry (29-0), putting the Okmulgee squad at 2-7 on the year and 0-6 in district play.

The Okmulgee squad went into its regular-season finale on November 3 looking to end the campaign on a winning note.

The final regular-season opponent in 2022 was the Morris Eagles, who also entered the regular-season finale winless in district play and a 2-7 record.

The winner of the county battle in Okmulgee would have the privilege of ending their season ahead of the other in the 2A-7 standings.

The two county squads battled back and forth throughout the four-quarter showdown with the host Bulldogs coming out on the short end of a 25-20 outcome, ending the 2022 campaign with an 8-game losing streak.

In their 10-game schedule in 2022, the Bulldogs were outscored 314-162 – an average of 31.4-16.2 ppg.

In its three non-district contests, the Okmulgee squad was outscored 62-58 – an average of 20.7-19.3 ppg., while being outscored 252-104 in district play – an average of 36.0-14.9 ppg.

The Bulldogs will begin the 2023 season August 25 at home against Star Spencer and will look to end two losing streaks – their current 8-game losing streak and 13-straight losing seasons.
